On a local station yesterday I heard a gov advert.

It went along the lines of:

If you speed you cause accidents.......which takes up valuble bed space and doctors time........which means less space for treating REAL patients.

This is a new one to me.
Anyone else heard this
Is this world going mad?

S'funny, I've never heard them use that argument against smokers with lung disease. Are we second class citizens now?

it would be intersting to know what "real" patients are,

1. Pregnacy?
2. IVF?
3. Smokers?
4. DIY'ers?
5. Cosmetic surgery?
6. Obesety

get rid of all these (self induced) and the NHS would be a lot quieter.

Why the hell should the state pay for people to bring kids into the world?

You get your bird up the duff you should hav eto take some f**king responsibility and pay for it's delivery/care....

You can't, dear chap. You cannot use private healthcare for the delivery of a baby these days, except in a tiny minority of cases. I checked this out in some detail because personally, I'd much rather have gone private.

But what a charming attitude you have.

Why not go off and have a go at people who have sex changes on the NHS instead???

Really? I thought you could stay in a private hospital to have a baby delivered. (Obviously you can pay a private hospital to do just about everything!) The catch being, your health insurance wouldn't cover it and you would have to pay for everything yourself ?

Nope. You can stay in a private hospital pre-delivery, and you can go back post-delivery, but you can't deliver there, you have to transfer to an NHS hospital for that - although you can pay for a private midwife who has to work alongside the NHS one (but you have to get the permission of the NHS midwife first).

You're right about the insurance not covering you for any of this. You can run up some quite impressive bills, apparently...

Toad

As my mrs has just given birth to our first son I will bite my teeth and not rise to the bait, However, thinking about child birth in the cold light of day the situation is this.
If we as a country don't replace the ageing population with fresh youthful and healthy youngsters whom is going to be generating the tax for everybody to live on and support our welfare state aour pensions our defence etc?? As it stands today for the first time ever there are more 60 year olds in our country than there are 16 year olds, and it looks as if this trend is set to continue.
It is therefore in the Governments best intrests to ensure that however many babies are born as many as possible are as healthy as possible. Also purley from a human rights aspect the government would be failing in its most basic requirement if it didn't look after women and the new born at the most traumatic, difficult and dangerous time in their lives!!
