RX8 headlamp alignment

My 2003 RX8 had just failed the MOT due to the automatic headlamp alignment system having a fault so the beam is on the floor. The MOT guy said the last Mazda that had this fault ended up with a £1000 bill for a new managment brain or something
Can anyone spread any light (no pun intended) on my problem before I throw myself at the mercy of my invoice happy local Mazda agent.

Do you get a yellow (i think) light showing on your dash?
I get this too, it's a faulty/broken headlight leveling sensor. I've not looked to getting it fixed as it seems to work fine when its wet/damp outside but I did enquire on the OC forum and apparently it's a fairly common fault and used to be around the price you said to fix it but the price for the sensor has come down and it's supposed to be around £3-400 to sort now.

Mine came on last week three times when it was really cold. First time its done it and I thought .... thats going to be expensive. It never seemed to make any difference to the beam height when the light was on, still high enough to see where you were going. Has not come on since the temperature got above zero. May see if the recall was done!

Mine turned out to be out of recall scope surprise surprise so they just wanted £830 for front & rear sensors that were siezed solid !! I took the car away thinking maybe un-siezing may be possible. The sensors turn out to be small variable resisters mounted near the suspension with a dog leg arm attached to the suspension so as the ride goes up and down the varying resistances adjust the headlamps.
On inspection I found one like brand new so that was a saving from the Mazda garage, the siezed one I took to my mate who makes mig welders, he took it apart and measured the resistance of the track inside ond put a wire speed control variable resister in my hand £2.50 !! when I attached it to the wire and turned it the lamps adjusted up and down !! Now I have a full MOT and a wire speed controller greased up and in a bag tie wrapped under the car. Frightening bodge I know but keeps me on the road until finances allow a genuine part.
