I fancy this:

I also think I can beat the 54m winning throw from last year.

Anyone else take satisfaction from skimmimg stones across calm waters?

Yes, love it. 12 skips is my record, I must have been about 15, but I always remember that!!!

You need a lot of tensional strength and stamina in the wrist and...

...oh hang on.

-I'm rubbish at skimming stones actually!

Ha!

I used to love doing this.

Always remember skimming stones off a beach in Cornwall, was upto about 10 skips when a swimmer surfaced and got a stone in the side of the head!

I took part last year. smile

I was getting pretty good distances when I was practicing but it got windy later in the day and I didn't bag a safe skim in the comp. Got three no throws as they didn’t slim three times. Sounds pretty simple but I was trying too hard for distance rather than getting them to skim really well, they must have been over 30m but didn’t count and they were still a bit short of the winner!
It was a good day out and fun terrifying my mates of the drive up.

Will be back this year to win!!

My parents in law live next to a river which slowly meanders around a bend. This causes a beach of perfect rounded, flat stones and about 40 yards of flat, slack water. I get stones over to the bank on the other side at will.

Its therapeutic, although I don't know why.

Just found this photo and have remembered why its therapuetic. Water levels higher than normal but you get the idea.

I learned to skim stones when I was about 5. Living near a river growing up I got loads of practice. Once they get over 20 skips you can't really count the individual skips with the naked eye. The final skips before sinking don't leave the water completely, then just bounce on the surface. The key is luck, stone shape, smoothness and weight, the angle of attack, the snap of the wrist and the hardest throw you can muster. Simple fun. I got it completely wrong one day and fired a biscuit sized stone at my friends skull, who was stood near the river bank about 4 yards from me. Ouch.
