cheap new york accomodation

Am heading off out there for a week in may09 but need accomodation a quick search shows that it will be upwards of £700....
Can anyone help/advise I would like to stay somewhere central But dont want to stay in the Bronx or Harlem.

I took my family of five for a week a few years ago. We stayed near Empire State Building off 5th Avenue.

I did loads of research on hotels using the travel and hotel websites. When I homed in on my choice, out of curiosity, I phoned the hotel direct and got a much better deal than the so called "best price" sites. What's more I did not have to pay in advance.

Don' be put off room only rates either. Breakfast in cafe's is a good deal. Our hotel served free coffee and muffins for residents as well

Hotels are expensive in New York compared to the rest of the US; you really need to hunt around.

If the trip is pleasure, I'd choose another major city, e.g. Chicago. If it's business, get your employer to pay and don't worry about the cost

Its pleasure never been the the states so just thought NY would be a good starting point.

NY is a great starting point we would go again without hesitation. From memeory we managed on about £200 per day (exc shopping) rate then was £1=$1.7. The big variable is tickets for various sights and whether you go to shows. We walked everywhere.

Not really in my view. Much better to do a fly drive and travel to see the real States. We did Florida for 2 weeks without going to a single Disneyesk place and it was great intro. New York is just a big city. Nice enough but I only like it when the company pays.

These days New York doesn't do cheap.

Only going for 7 nights though & the £239rtn LHR to NY is very tempting.

It's worth checking out some of the apartment places as they can be very reasonable for a week or more. Certainly cheaper than a hotel, you get your own place, with kitchen facilities.

Depends what you like and family circumstances.

I go to US alot on business and lived there for a while. On the trip I referred to we did one week in New York and another in Cape Cod/Boston. Served everyones needs.

stayed in the newton, 96th and broadway. decent place for the money with nearby subway and great dinner for breakfast nextdoor.

The Westin just off Times Square for us when we went. Don't scrimp you tightarse! NY is expensive but it's NY!

You could stay in Queens I suppose but that defeats the object. Or Brooklyn.

I have stayed there a few times when passing through NY and have recommended it to friends to have also used it.

It's not got a lift so you have to carry your cases up the stairs and the rooms are functional but comfortable with aircon, cable TV. No room service of other frills, but if you just want a place to crash you can't fault it

Location is fantastic right in the centre of Manhatten at 32nd and 7th. You'll never forget the phone number either Pennsylvania 65000. It was undergoing a repaint when I was there.

I have just stayed at The Park Central Hotel on 7th and 56th. $135 per night plus tax. Decent 3.5 start hotel in Midtown. There are plenty of places near by for Breakfast etc.
