So I put my crusties in the washing machine this morning and set the programme to the longest wash as usual. Upon pressing start, instead of the satisfying trickle of filling water I got a quiet electrical drone from the machine. Buggery!

After much fiddling about I appear to have found the source of the problem...pictured below is a grey'thing' which if I shoogle it about in a manly way intermittently suddenly makes a thunk and allows water to be drawn into the machine.Unfortunately it invariably thunks again and water stops flowing (cue electrical drone) I can't get leverage on the filling pipe to remove it from the 'thing' so as to unscrew the 'thing'.

Anyone help? What is 'thing'? (I'm running low on undercrackers)

Don't know what it is really, I suppose it could be a water cut-off thingy to save flooding if the washing machine goes bust. Why have you turned the water off at the valve?

ETA: Did not see your post TvrJohn.

Thanks fellas. Yep tap turned off while I was trying to get the top pipe off 'thing' so as to unscrew/disconnect 'thing' and subsequently bang against kitchen counter in miracle-fix procedure....
