he will be missed and i hope that history doesnt repeat itself with mclarens slump when ron stepped back from f1 for a while a few years back.

he will still be a major driving force though within the team i reckon. who will eb standing in? i assume its the obvious choice?

Wow, he's been boss at McLaren for a long time, thats a big shake up to be having, even though I'm sure Whitmarsh is up to the job. It'll still take time for everything to gel again.

it might be less of distraction. I think sometimes the team don't make the right decision because RD is there. It might help them relax more and go by instinct rather than think what will Ron do. That shows the respect the team have for the man and Ron has for his team

I don't understand. You need to explain why he should have gone a long time ago and why that might be old fashioned.

Sorry to see him go, I am sure Ron will have passed the team on to a safe pair of hands in Martin Whitmarsh, he obviously has faith that he will continue the winning and hopefully improve on even 2008. I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of Ron's hard work.

Note that he's not stepping down from McLaren, he's stepping down from the F1 team. McLaren is a much, much bigger company than "just" an F1 team, and there are many other challenges for him to keep on top - road cars, for instance.

Ron is one of the greats. He's won more chapionships than any driver. That will leave just Frank Williams/Patrick Head of the old school. This is a sad day in many ways although I feel sure that he would have gone last year had it not been for the Stepneygate affront to him. I reckon that he did not want to seem to be running away. And to stick two fingers up to Mosley.

His record speaks for itself. The only time MP4 went downhill was when he took a step back. I would expect that this won't happen this time.

What a career. Well done and all the best.

2007 - spygate, lost wife, badly affected health, won nothing
2008 - took prodigal son to world championship, got back at ferrari/fia in best possible way
2009 - retire
