Leaving at 4.30pm tonight.

Which way should I head to avoid delays?

A702 -> M72 -> M6 or A1/M1?

If it was me I'd take the A1 and join the M1 as the A1/M1 split just south of Wetherby, or carry on down the A1 and head across from Newark.

I wouldn't bother heading across country to the M6 and down.

A68 (providing your overtaking and Scamera detection skills are up to scratch!) --> A1 --> A1M --> then it's up to you which way you go as the M1 around Nottinham is a 'mare at the moment.

The A1 has major works on it below Doncaster to Newark.

I'd go A1/M18/M1

Are they still going (as in updating the roundabouts to flyovers)?

I realise the OP is probably already in Leicester, but...

I do this run professionally about twice a month. I always go Biggar-Abington road (number escapes me for the mo)/ M73/M6, and can do Edinburgh - Northampton in a little under five hours on a good day. To Leicester, one could cut across the M69 from the M6, but quite often to avoid the M6/M5 split and the roadworks in Brum, I take J15 and cut across the A50 to Donnington, That drops you just north of Leicester, Job's a good 'un!
