I have the standard BMW DVD based sat nav system (in my September 2006 Z4MC) and was wondering whether it was worth upgrading the system with more up to date software etc.

The main areas I am currently missing are: speed camera warnings, a traffic alert system that works (the TMS system I'm now using is pretty useless) and perspective view.

I've read other posts on BMW sat nav systems but I am thoroughly confused.

I've gone into settings on my screen and get the following: SW 4-1/71 (which I understand is the current operating system and software.)

Is it worth installing an upgrade and, if so, how do I do it please?

Thanks

The updates simply update the maps and the POIs - they don't add any speed camera warnings, or 7 digit postcodes, nor any other traffic warnings other than the standard TMC one.

Your options are:
  1. get a hacked DVD for £20 or so from someone, which includes the speed cameras and 7 digit postcodes (doesn't do anything about the traffic though), and then buy another every couple of months to keep the speed camera data up-to-date;
  2. get another satnav which can be updated on your PC with speed camera locations, and any other POIs you fancy, plus the new TomTom ones have access to up-to-date live traffic info;
  3. get a speed camera alert system.
I'm currently doing #2, but will try one of the hacked DVDs to see if it's any good.

I'm inclined to try the hacked DVD - I'm keen to use the existing dashboard pop up screen which, as you know, you get with the Z4MC.

1) You could take your old, broken one to BMW and get an upgraded one for £99.
2) You could get a legit, but older, one from ebay.
3) You could get a hacked one from somewhere.

The e bay DVDs with the camera positions are pretty crude. You get a great big camera icon, but no audible alert of any sort. So unless you constantly gaze at the map, you are wasting your time IMHO
(yes, i know because i bought one getmecoat )

If you do constantly watch the map... you will crash!

I've just bought one too but haven't received it yet. Speed cameras without any audible warning are pretty pointless.

There is currently no way to add audible alerts to the POI categories, and I wouldn't hold your breath as they've been trying to do this for years.

Either be happy with visible alerts (useless in my opinion as I normally have the screen closed and just the voice on), or get a TomTom/Nuvi/Navigon/SpeedAlert/RoadAngel/etc.

In an ideal world, I'd like to continue to use the BMW pop up screen (rather than have something separate.) This may be a hopelessly naive question, but is there anything out there which I can channel through the BMW system?
