I got back from working in the USA yesterday, checked out five weeks of mail, found my new HSBC debit card. "Ready to use, simply dispose of you old card".

Okay, snippety snip, scissors job on the old card, and off to the shops today.

Nope, card won't work, so the cashier made some phone calls and I eventually spoke to an Indian.

"Sir, your card is one of a list we have of cards being cloned" she explained.

"When did this happen?" I asked her.

"First report was when somebody tried to withdraw £68 from an ATM in Philadelphia airport on the 14th Jan. So we stopped that transaction and you won't lose any money at all sir. Please destroy your new card and we will send you a new one"

I then told her that I was in Philadelphia airport Wednesday 14th, and I withdrew $100 from an ATM, £68, and no, they DIDN'T stop the transaction, as I still have most of the $100 in my wallet!

I wonder what happens next? confused

Well, you're in the money.

Next time inform your bank/CC when you're going abroad.

I'm sure i seen a news article about a confirmed bachelor who was stuck in Amsterdam with no money when his card was cancelled, and the news item went on to say that it's something else that looks for odd spendine patterns, either an external organisation or just a computer application, and you can't pre-warn it.

HSBC are the bloody worst.

Last year I flew into Montreal - card wouldn't work - and I only had the one credit card with me, so couldn't even get my hire car... left me f**ked with barely any cash and no frigging car. Tried calling them and the call centre was closed....

Eventually got to the hotel, couldn't authorise the extras etc.... all cause HSBC basically went too far the other way...

Shower of ste...

No sir, Natwest are the worst.

I gather from comments that were made that a certain phone call that I made to them from New York has been used as an example of when a customer is literally going to blow a blood vessel in his head and has moved beyond the point of angry to psychotic.

yep, hsbc are a shower of the brown stuff....

I was going to thailand, I let them know I was going so my card didnt get cancelled...they told me there was no guarantees it wudn't get cancelled. Tt got cancelled after about 3 hours of being there. it took me about 24 hours for them to sort it out, and about 2 weeks later, it was cancelled again. So I transefered all my money into my natwest account online. and used that for the rest of it and it was fine... never even told natwest I was going (not sure if thats a good thing I could keep using it, ie security)

Same thing happened to me when I was working in Moscow.

When we're spending on expenses, it's usually up to the most senior team member to pay the bill. However we were in a Mexican restaurant one weekend and I offered to pay as the other two with me where going home that night and had already submitted their expenses for the period.

Got a phone call the following day from the CC company saying they'd got some unusual activity on my card. I pointed out that they were told that I was in Moscow and I'd just spent 500 roubles on it for dinner. They then pointed out that someone had taken £2000 out on it at the Travelex at the airport. This obviously wasn't me, so they cancelled the card there and then and said they'd send me a form to sign to get a new card and the £2000 credited to my account.

The only problem was they would only send the form to my home address in the UK, and I would be in Moscow for another 4 weeks! I worked around this using my debit card on a CitiBank ATM.

I got home and found the form, signed it and sent it off. 4 weeks later I was back in the UK once again and my card had finally arrived.

Don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had a back-up or funds in the bank and a good overdraft, as the basic hotel we were in was £250/night and I was there for 28 days at a time!

It's why I've got 2 credit cards - I only use one of them, but about 2- 3times a year one is cancelled due to fraud of some sort, and I dread being stuck overseas on holiday/business without a card!

yes Wifey and I have 4 between us and we keep them all active. Have 2 or 3 cloning/fraud episodes per year. It's just a boring routine now.

How on earth do your 'spare' cards that you presumably don't use get cloned/defauded.

I don't consider myself overly cautious (e.g. don't necessarily shred statements etc) but I have one CC and one debit card which have both been used all over the world and online, and use internet banking every day, and have never, ever, been the subject of fraud.

I'm sure it is just a matter of time, but 2-3 times a year?

No, they're not "spare", we keep them all in use, all the time. What I find bizarre is that 2 of last year's misuse incidents were of the cards being used to buy flight tickets - I'd have thought that was easy to trace. However I don't think the will is there - the banks never seem to give a toss. I understand they just do a chargeback, so if it doesn't cost them anything they presumeably don't care.

They cut me off in Switzerland. Admittedly I had used my card in 3 countries in 8 hours. Took a lot of 'heated debate' over their international customer help line to get it reactivated.
