Both my 120D SE and Z4Coupe have the 3.5mm jack point. So today I bought an ipod link cable from BMW, it has 3 connections; 3.5mm, usb & the ipod connection. Point to note also is that the cable is very short and isn't great for stowage! Neither car has a usb port.

On the Z4 (07 car) the sound is as loud and clear as the CD players. However in order to change the tunes you have to do it on the ipod....I can live with this, but is it possible to retrofit a USB connection? I can't believe that it doesn't have both 3.5 & usb on an 07 car with sat nav, bloody ridiculous!

However I can't get it to work at all on the 1 series. It's a 55 plate, the Aux In is under the arm rest, it has a business class stereo. Toggling through the MODE button it just goes from CD to radio. Anyone got any ideas?

Beginning to think I should return the cable seeing as it was 40 quid!!!

Cheers in advance!

I used to use my iPod on my 1er (now just go with MP3 CDs - a lot easier IMHO!) - just select the AUX option on the stereo. Nice and simple so not sure why yours isn't appearing. Are you sure you have pushed the jack in all the way - mine needed a good shove...

I have the 'Professional' stereo in my 120d ('06 reg) and that allows me to select the AUX input - this works fine with my iPod. Would be much better if it has the usb connector too.

I'd take your cable back and by just a jack/jack cable to connect to the aux socket. I bought one from eBay for a couple of quid (plus p&p).

Yup, the Ipod connector lead is only for cars with USB I believe so you can control the Ipod from the head unit selecting tracks etc. If you just want to play the Ipod (or any MP3 player) through the 3.5mm jack socket you just need a basic 3.5mm to 3.5mm extension lead for a quid or two off Ebay.

Feedback:

I contacted my local BMW stealer today and they's said that it most likely needs a software push to reset it to show AUX on the headunit.

Apparently it an easy job where they just plug in and let it run, so they can do while I wait....but it can take up to 3hrs.

And to do this it will cost a whopping 380 quid!!!!

Errr....maybe not!

Depending on how old it is, i would be pushing for them to do it for free. Especially if it was bought fairly recently.

Unfortunately just out of warranty last month! Stealer told me it wouldn't be covered under warranty anyway!!! I already have a decent Alpine system with ipod link so will be spending £25 for the fascia instead....seems like a bargain and I know sound quality will be much improved with the added advantage that the ipod is fully controllable through the Alpine head unit.

From memory the usb was a factory option from late 07 and also as a dealer fit around the same time but only for certain models (something to do with the cars bus software or something??). You have three choices of connection.
1. Auxiliary cable £40 with no multi function steering controls or head unit control.

2. Interface cable £120 to £200, put ipod in glove box and control track select from controls etc (not sure if you can search via albums etc??)

3. Usb interface, as above but greater range of kit can now be conected to car.

I'm no techno wiz as far as the workshop is concerned so there maybe a few more things they allow you to do. I can look it up but that would take longer lol!!!!
