Not a scam I did this today.

Apologies if posted elsewhere.

There's a tax refund available for people with a child born between April 6 1986 and 5 April 2003.
NOT means tested.

Call the tax office on 0845 302 1460 - check you're eligible - you probably will be.

If yes.

Go to www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/11ctc.pdf and download the form.

Do this before 31 Jan.

It IS Means Tested...

£1 is removed from the benefit for every £15 you earned into the 40% tax bracket.

I suspect other peoples children will be a bit miffed to pay your pension!

Don't worry, the OAP will be worth £0 by the time I get there, and as for a private pension, I pay it. Although the funds are now taxed, of course, to pay for other people's bloody children, bah!

And other people's children will be the ones running the country and looking after you when you are living on your old age pension (and managing the fund...)

P.S. - I am paying far to much tax, get nothing from the state in handouts and have to fund my own children... wink

Are they just reminding people about the Child Tax Credit? This IS definitely means tested (as are all the myriad and stupidly complicated Tax Credits).

Wouldn't that means test have to be applied in a back-dated manner, to a claimnat's circumstances when the payment should have been made? I think it applies to the year before or during the introduction of CTC, when there may have been a hiccup in the system. Hopefully as somebody providing accountancy services you know more than me who pays for them!

I you are PAYE you would have already had it.
Not PAYE, so not had anything from the tax people for over fifteen years, except grief.

I try to avoid ANYTHING to do with Tax Credits. In fact, even though the word "tax" is included in the title, they have absolutely nothing to do with the tax system, apart from being (mis)managed by HMRC.

Fully understood. My accountant has never stopped cursing eejit Brown's foolishness over how CTC were (mis)managed during birth and after being put under the auspices of HMRC.

If your missus earns less than that she may be able to claim it instead. Worth an ask, shirley?

This turns out to be the Childrens Tax Credit (not Child Tax Credit) that was in place for a brief moment just before the Tax Credit system was introduced.

It was in place for just the tax years 2001/02 and 2002/03 and was a genuine old fashioned additional tax allowance you could claim if you had at least one child up to the age of 16 in that tax year. Because of the general six year Statute of Limitations rules for making allowance claims, the last chance to make this particular claim is 31 January 2009.

Child Tax Credit replaced Children's Tax Credit in tax year 2003/04 and is totally different. It is nothing to do with tax relief and is, in reality, a means tested benefit. For political purposes, Gordon Brown decided that the expression "means tested benefit" would not be good (even if it was accurate) and replaced it with the misleading term "Tax Credit".

Nope. Higher-earning partner has to claim. Benefit is reduced by £1 for every £15 earned above the higher-earnings threshold, as others have pointed out. At £7.5k earned above threshold, it reduces to zero. In 2002/3, that equates to an income of £42,015.
