Everone paps on about bridgestones and toyos, i am having my wheels machine turned this week and i have decided to also have a new set of rubber i have a 1992 early 4.0 and after looking through the steve heath book i have decided to go for the later 245x45x16 rears and 205x50x15 on the front as i want the most out of my griff, i will be also fitting a set of red shocks but thats another matter...

However does anyone have a good experience in other brands of tyres fitted to their griff, i currently have dunlops on at the moment and found them ok but i am a great fan of yokos and continentals so any comments please.

Andy.

Same boat here soon. Rears need replacing for the MOT. I must say though that the Bridgestones on the back have taken a dam good hammering the last 12 months, what with three 15 minute sessions at Coombe in June & all the daily 'stick' I give them. They've lasted much better than anything I've had on the Wedges. Quite impressed TBH. yes

Come on Wyn please dont mention the 'B' word or the 'T' word, mention some other brands........

Most griffs probably do as a guess around 1000 miles a year so what does it matter how long they last anyway its grip grip grip isnt it ????

The main problem at the moment is finding tyres with the correct speed rating.

I am not sure what the factory stated was the correct speed rating on the 4.0 but on the 500's it is Z or W rating.

Some people have been fitting the lower V rated tyres which have a max of 149mph & then notifying their insurance companies. As I have exceeded the V rating maximum on numerous occasions I was not prepared to take the risk.

In Z/W rating on the 225/50/15(front with PAS) I seem to remember there was only Dunlop, Falken, Toyo 888 & another make I had never heard of, don't remember seeing a P Zero though. There seemed to be more choice on the rear size.

In the end I went for 888's on the front & T1-R's on the back....the turn in is now amazing as I discovered on the way to Le Mans last year when I entered a corner at speed & discovered it was actually a hairpin yikes

I don`t think you`ll find many options open to you on the front wheels, go to any tyre distributor and you`ll be lucky to get 3 options at most, and then you`ve got to find a pair in stock, I ended up with michellin pilots on the front of mine, and have been pleasantly suprised, good grip wet an dry.

hapy hunting.

I would imagine these to be a too hard compound for the Griff..... I've just 20k on pzeros in my daily hack on the front... and there is 6mm left on the back...

only my thoughts..... not experienced them on a Tiv

Kumho V70A Ectsa.... (medium coumpound front, hard compound rear)

Fantastic grip........ I think I'm probably the only one of the regular posters who is running these tyres....

I did some homework on them, asked some of the people better qualified then me on this subject, read some comments or rather read into what was not said about them from distributer of Toyo's.....

I think I made a v good choice, I've run them in v wet conditions (not on the edge I hasten to add) and in the dry ....

So much more grip... power down a lot early on roundabouts, powering round bends where previously lifting off.......

ohh speed rated correctly as well

Andy.
Is that front tyre size correct? I've seen 205/50/15 on the front and it looked very small. 215/50/15 looks OK as does 225/50/15. I'd have thought 205/55/15 would be right?
I have 888's on mine. I used to worry about wear but I get at least a year out of them and don't drive in the pouring rain if I can avoid it.

Indeed - originally the 500s were fitted with 205/55x15 non-PAS and 225/50x15 PAS

You really need to fit different wheels.

That way, you open up the choice of suitable tyres and make room for better brakes too.

If you choose the wheels for low weight, the reduced unsprung weight makes a big ride and handling improvement too.

I think the 205x55x15 look like bus tyres, they did fit 205x50x15 on some chimeras if my memory serves me well, and if im going to put 45 series on the back it will look unbalanced asthetically.

I had a set of Kuhmos on my series 1 rs turbo and they were great but each car is different also TVR made my car 17 yrs ago and tyres have changed alot since then.

Need to dig more.

What about some advise from guys who race griffs??????? surely they will have a better idea

I doubt the chaps who race Griffs do so on 15" wheels so their suggestion will be get larger wheels. If you do that then the tyre choice will be greater.

I fully understand that, what i mean is they will have more of an idea than us about tyres and grip

I do about 5-6k annually & the wedge rears used to last me about 3k. hehe I have 205's on the front too & I shall also be looking to put 245's on the rear (225's at the mo). I'll be doing some shopping around. Keep you posted. I'm looking for something that'll be good on track too.

confused But I don't understand, clearly your car needs road legal tyres and Toyos & Bridgestones are most commonly mentioned because they are very good. But... you just had your 15"/16" wheels refurbished so racing tyres and road legal slicks like the Toyo R888 won't fit so I don't see how you can go for the stuff the racers wear?

RICHB............

What i meant was anyone who is involved with motor sport especially racing griffs will have a better understanding/knowledge of quality tyre grip even when driving on main public highway roads ,as we dont experience track racing they push their cars to the limit and beyond way above what could be done on a road,so even if they were driving say a transit on the A6 they have better experince of good and bad tyres.........ok?
