Help Immobiliser Problem

Car broke down on the M25 was driving along lost all revs. Tried to restart it turned over but wouldn't spark, AA bloke thought it was a distributer cap.
I've got it in at a TVR garage, been told it's the immobiliser which will code aroun £500 to replace including fitting.
Does this sound right? It's the original immobiliser, been told it'll cost nearly as much to remove so I can drive the car.
