engine cut out
Discussion
Yesterday, as I was creeping out of the car park at work, the engine just cut out. No spluttering or coughing, just as if I had hit the off button. Then it wouldn't start again for a couple of minutes. I locked/unlocked the car a couple of times and it almost caught, and then while I was chatting to a mate it enabled the immobiliser itself, then, when I disabled it and tried again, it caught and fired up OK. It was then fine all the way home.
Any ideas? My first thought was the immobiliser. The electrics have been a bit odd lately, the window often winds down too far when you open the door, and doesn't close properly when you shut it, and in the mornings the rev counter doesn't work until it gets enough revs (and the lights fade and brighten with the amount of revs it has) and so on. It is charging, but only after about 1100rpm, not at idle.
On the other hand the engine has developed a flat spot at around 1400rpm where it stutters a bit. I think this may be a lambda on its way out as I had this before and tried to change it, but didn't have enough clearance at the time, so I just blew it clean with some compressed air and it seemed a lot better after that. I meant to change it at a later date, but never got around to it.
Anybody had similar experiences? I'm just concerned about the way it just died. I don't want it to happen at an... inconvenient time. That would be a real pita

checked the position of your ECU? thread a while back with similar symptoms turned out to be water in ECU cause of a puddle forming in the passenger footwell...
Nah, dry as a bone. I fixed all the leaks several months ago. I've just had a go at reading the ECU, but my cable has crapped out. I need to resolder one of the pins. I did get it working and the readings were all over the place, but I think that was because of the state of the cable.I'll see if I can find 5 mins this afternoon to fix it and have another go. See if I can see anything amiss.
It drove home last night fine, it just cut out that once and seems to be having 'leccy issues. Mind you, I've just noticed that the passenger door seems to be pretty much ok, so maybe that particular issue is the microswitch...

Big Fuse!
Hmmm... Only changed that about a month ago...I wouldn't rule it out completely, as over tightening the terminals could crack the fuse, which will certainly cause the rev counter/lights problem. Could account for the stall too, althoguh that does sound more like immobiliser gremlins.....
Good luck !
I used a "standard" one, lookls like a metal comb with a few teeth missing. I suppose it's possible. I just drove up to Clay Cross and back, an hour or so drive each way, and it behaved fine. It's been dark, wet and cold lately and I don't live very far from work. I wonder if it's just that my net power consumption has been more than my net power production over the last few weeks and the battery is just near flat. It seems a lot better after that long run, so it may be worth me just giving the battery a damn good blast with the charger.
