What Oil for a 111R
Discussion
Sorry to ask this question again, when I know it has been answered before many times, but need the answer quickly, as need to buy some prior to the BoLOCs run tomorrow.
The Owners manual says 5W/40, however I can not find any manufacturesrs that have this, other than Halfords own brand.
Any suggestions greatly received. I am also now starting a search of the site.

Going by that site, Catrol Magnatec is not an option and yet I know thats what Sportomotive have put in it at the last service.
I think, "bag of spanners" was often used to describe Magnatec in an Elise. I tend to top mine up with Motul - but as it's tiping it down right now, I don't fancy a trip to the shed to look what grade.[edit]Just found the receipt in my email: Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40

Have a can of Mobil 1 Motorsport fully synthetic that I use to top mine up between services. very welcome to pop by before heading down to the Pavilion. I am in Stapehill, just off Canford Bottom Roundabout
You are very close to my location, nea the Angel Pub in FerndownThis raises another question about oil, what can be mixed. I know different grades can be eg 5W/40, with 10W/60 etc, but can synthetic, semi-synthetic, normal oils be mixed too.
Just an idle question now, but interested in knowing

Mobil Motorsport is a 15w/50 oil, this will give your battery, starter and oil pump a lot more work to do on start up taking longer to reach the top end.
The K series and the Toyota engine use a 10w as standard and you can improve on this with a 5w or a 0w.
The standard hot grade is a /40, this should not be played with unless better protection is required for excessive heat from track days but this will be at the sacrifice of a few BHP and MPH.
Always remember to let your engine idle for a couple of minutes on return, this will let the engine oil take the heat away and stop it being burnt onto the hydraulic tappets restricting there travel making them tick and rattle.
I would use Mobil 1 0w40 now in a 5ltr can, The car accessory shop on Ringwood Road Ferndown next to Tesco may give you a little discount if you mention the Lotus Club and say Phil sent you. [not Halfrauds]

Interesting that posters have to top up their oil. My engine hasnt used any oil in the 4k miles I've had the car. Do they vary that much or is it that the engine only uses oil on the second cam - because I dont constantly rev that high.
As for the oils, I doubt very much that there is much difference between the products coming from the big companies like Castrol, Mobil, Shell, BP. And since the engine isnt really very exotic / high output I cant see any small differences mattering. Maybe if you're extracting 400 bhp from a Honda it would be different but the 100bhp / litre of the 111R isnt anything special.

So can anyone answer Yes or No, to the Q, can Synth, semi-synth, organic olis be mixed ?
Not ideally.Edited by Beachbum on Monday 19th January 08:59
I use Mobil 1 15 / 50.
2 reasons.
1)It is slightly thicker and gets rid of the "tappity" noise a yota engine can make.
2) It is readily available from halfrauds.

" Use OPIE - first class service, delivered to your door thumbup" and horrendously expensive. Main dealer service price levels.
Eh? I can get 5 litres of Silkolene for around £35 and either carriage is free or a litre bottle is thrown in. 4 litres of Mobil 1 is over £40 in Halfords.Gassing Station | Elise/Exige/Europa/340R | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
