Just found out I've herniated a disc in my back.... again!

I had an op a year and a half ago to deal with a hernia that was compressing my sciatic nerve after foolishly trying to hang on to a horse that was trying to bolt.

This time around I can't think of anything I've done in the past six weeks that might cause damage to my back, yet last sunday tried to get up after lying on the beach and was in agony. Went to see the Doc and was sent for an MRI. It seems the same disc is even more compressed than before and is the cause of the pain.... Surely I'd have had to do something to cause it/ Something that I would have been aware of at the time??? Or is it a case that once they've been operated on they are weaker??

Have sent the latest MRI to the original surgeon in Frnace to see if I really need to go under the knife again?

Lying in certain positions can put excess pressure on certain areas of your back. I wouldnt recommend lying on an beach if youve had back probelms previously.

I've subsequently found that staying in any position upright, seated or otherwise all lead to the same pain and discomfort for about 5 minutes of me walking around like Rob Lowe after he was internally inspected in Waynes World!! Might look funny but hurts like buggery!

I'm in exactly the same boat - except this is my first time. Waiting for an MRI scan now. Nothing to offer except genuine sympathy.

Ive had back problems for a while now. Sitting up at a desk and working for long periods of time, driving for long periods of time and sleeping on dodgy sofas and beds seem to aggrivate it.

I know of a few excercises that help alot, and ease the pain straight away aswell as unlocking joints.

Im not sure if theyre suitable for people with herniated discs though.

My sympathines go with you! I've been through it before at least!! More importantly are you getting sciatic pains or loss of sensation your legs? If you are, even to a small degree press the docs to move the MRI up. Last time around I left it too long thinking it'd sort itself. When I finally went to my GP he did a cursory check of my posture, range of mobility and reflexes and called a surgeon straight away, they operated four days later!

I've been put in touch with a physio while I wait for the last lot of MRI's to get here and apparently they are going to give me some strecthing exercises until a decision is made one way or another...

If you've not seen a specialist,I wouldn't recommend any sort of manipulation as it could make things worse!

yikes I'm getting pain (plenty of it) and loss of sensation. I have seen my GP, who's either not interested or not concerned, and I'm on the waiting list for a scan date.

I can't begin to imagine how soul destroying it must be to have it a second time!

If you're experiencing pain and loss of sensation in your leg that would suggest your sciatic nerve is being compressed as mine was. I'd say you chould get a second opinion if the original Doc isn't interested.
