What is my venus fly trap doing?

Bought last spring, and I have managed not to kill it yet 
Over the summer it did very well and caught loads of flies.
Over the past couple of weeks most of the trap bits have wilted or died, and now it has grown like this:
Its is just under ten inches high..(yes, I have measured it
)
I'm not quite sure what its hoping to achieve, I keep thinking I'll come down one morning and it will have taken over the entire kitchen, but at the moment it just keeps getting taller.
Still, if I get home from work and my wife looks like this:
Then I'll know whats up!

Mine does the same thing a couple of times a year, you should get a white flower at the end of the stalk. Each time it wilts away it regrows after a week or two
Oh right, I shall wait and see what happens then... That is if your quite sure that it's not going to eat me - your neighbours haven't lost any pets or small children recently?
Think life-cycle. It's scoffed loads of flies, and so is now in a position to reproduce (whch takes energy). That means making flowers and possibly seeds (I don't know if they're self-fertile) - and it will either go back to normal afterwards, or die, depending on the type of plant, eg annual, perennial.

I hope its not expecting me to, erm, 'fertilise' it.
