I've just bought a 1990 Audi 90 2.3E 10v from a family member that needs recomissioning after having been off the road for nearly two years. When I went to check it over today I found that the battery was flat, the rear tyres had lost all pressure and the o/s/f wing had started to rust (light bubbling) around the upper arch.
I've brought the battery back home to stick on charge though i'm fairly sure it's goosed - the 90 fired up instantly with jump leads and when the leads were removed the car ran fine - but after 15 mins idling I turned the car off, tried to restart and couldn't even get the starter to click.
I also need to find a decent source for parts - it needs new rear brake pads (fronts appear ok, though i'll probably do both ends at the same time. Who does decent performance pads for the 90's? The exhaust is a bit of a bodge job, with a rear box off a Peugeot of some flavour (the whole system was replaced back in 2002 when the 90 was acquired although the rear box has since needed replacement) - where can I get a performance exhaust system that won't be too loud but makes the straight 5 sound much better?
I also need service parts (oil filter, air filter etc), am I best just going to EuroCarParts/GSF or should I go elsewhere for service items?
Cheers

I bought myself a play 90 quattro sport 20v a few months ago. great car. Needs asome TLC like yours but each fix just adds to the appeal. VAGparts used to be great but they unfortunately ceased trading before xmas time. GFS probably a good choice. There is a very big network of owners of these and some good SH parts will sort you out.
The 10v engine you have is possibly one of the nicest sounding Audi have ever produced imho. Exhaust-wise there are a lot of options, i had a 100 with the 10v engine running a 3" system with 2 silencers it was LOUD but the sound was devine, too much for daily use.
If your car has it, suggest making a blink code reader for your car and pulling some faults. especially if you have starting/ ignition issues. check here for how to do this. http://www.20v.org/tools.htm
suggest trying audifans.net for detailed information a couple of dozen 90 owners.

2.2 10v has the old k-jetronic fuel sytem so codes are not available in the way they are on the later 20v mototronic system. 2.3 10v may have the ability to read the flashing codes per the 20v though. All great cars and the 2.2 10v (pre cat) is the be sounding. Had 6 over the years, 10v and 20vs, and modern cars miss the character that these old Audis had.

Can you give us an idea of what age it is, was targeting the blink codes for that reason. Saves a bit of time if that option is there.
Agreed, my first B3 car, had 2 B4 quattros and currently have a B6 quattro, although its good I just dont feel as connected as I do in the 90. Also must say its nice to see one getting a mention in here, keep up the good work! And give us an update on your progress.
Soundwise you will struggle to get something that sounds as good as this lump. Just google the 10v audi for noise.

Cheers for the advice - much appreciated. It's a 1990 90 with the K-Jet system mentioned previously - I did have a mad idea to supercharge it using an Eaton M60 but plumbing in the K-Jet might be too might hassle
As far as I know there are no actual faults on the car - the battery has collapsed cells so a new battery is on the list of bits to buy. Hopefully i'll collect the car within the next week or so (E36 has to go first) and get it booked in for an MoT. It's been my Mum's car for the last 7 years and when it was first bought Dad fitted the rear exhaust can from an R1 - it sounded fantastic, almost like a big-cc V8

there is a chap on audifans half way through supercharging a 90 10v with an eaton charger. if you want to loose a LOT of hours. read the projects here www.motorgeek.com. Transplants are fairly common too. Also rare but possible are the 2.5 stroker projects, a few were available off the shelf back in the day.

Is it a quattro or FWD? the 10v is a fairly torquey unit as it is, imagine a big power one would munch tyres.
Get it running bang on first and a healthy car will be a good basis.

Mine's a FWD example - though if a rough one with the Quattro system fitted comes up at a good price I might well be interested in making it 4WD....

Not the same car, but certainly similar vintage.....
I rescued a 1989 (B3) Audi Coupe Quattro 2.3 back in November from the arms of a breaker for £200. It needed a shopping list of little bits where the guy had started breaking it, but it passed it's MOT a few weeks back.
It's got a Supersprint system (or part of - certainly the back box) which sounds absolutely glorious without being really loud....
Got to find the time to re-fit the door cards before tax it & I start driving it ! (time seems to be getting away from me)

converting FWD to quattro is a LOT of work, at the price of a 90's at the moment better of starting with a Quattro. However FWD monsters can be, well interesting. I have a n A6 avant with a tweaked 1.8T which eats front tyres, useless off the mark but gets going above 50.. provided its not raining.
Well a couple of days ago my E36 was taken away and this appeared in it's place:

First job was to get the car looking good, rather than like a car that has spent a while off the road:

And after a liberal application of Autoglym, the car looks a whole load better. Unfortunately the colour isn't the most rewarding to clean, unlike the black GTO, but on the upside hides the dirt fairly well.

Checking the car over, we found the exhaust blows slightly near the middle box, the handbrake needs tightening, and the o/s headlamp has a fair bit of condensation in it. Do same-shape 80 headlamps fit or are there any differences?

80 headlamps are different as they have the indicator attached alongside them. You need 90 or coupe lights. Theoretically you can disassemble the unit.
Be careful with the handbrake as often it is a sticky / seized caliper maechanism rather than an out of adjustment cable.
Still miss my 90s (all 5 of them....!!)

just hair dry it for the moment if you eed to get it mot'd then get a scrappy coupe or 90 h/light unit.
its worth replacing the wishbone bushes with poly bushes , I've used these recently (and also powerflex but they are the same and more expensive)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-80-B4-Front-Wishbone-Ar...
ignore the act that they are for a b4 , they still fit. (35mm from memory)
the scumball coupe quattro (kv engine) is running a standard exhaust with the centre box removed , cue lots of warbling!!!
also get a pipercross foam filter unit and ditch the standard airbox, this gives plenty of induction warble too!
back in the 90's (get it?) i had a remus exhaust on a 90 2.2e it sounded the bees and looked good too.
theres not a lot of quick fix engine mods for these, but I came very close to fitting nos to the scumball quattro before i ran out of time and had to go to the ring without.
if you need help with anything pm me, I've built a few of these starting with MOT fails and turning them into nurburgring specials.
ps. a b4 coupe front bumper and lowering the car an inch or two makes a lot of difference visually.

Cheers for that, I presume the 90 I have is a B3? (First time i've owned an Audi so i'm not sure of all the model designations).its worth replacing the wishbone bushes with poly bushes , I've used these recently (and also powerflex but they are the same and more expensive)

I'll probably go with lowering the car and fitting polybushes and decent brake pads, but not much further for the moment - it needs to be the reliable standard(ish) car while all my spare cash goes on the GTO. If the centrebox has split, we'll remove it - i'd forgotten how good the 2.3 10v sounds and spent the whole drive home in 2nd and 3rd.....

the 90 is a B3 shape, they all were, the B model series runs through in the current A4 series, the first genration A4 being the B5, as for nomeculture the facelifts are often called B5.5 etc.
Engines being the big one, the 90's were all five cylinder B3 80's basically. a little more upmarket trim offerings also. The B4 cars marked the phase out of the 5 cylinder engines and the V6's replaced these for the most part.
The B4 coupe front end will go on a 90 but its not a perfect fit.
The KV with no centre section is LOUD, but it sounds bloody ace. drove one like that for a wee while and never tired of warrrrrrrrbbb against echo-y concrete.
I know a 20v running NOS regularly, the KV will scour my links say a throttle bodied one recently. TSR and GTi engineering amoungst others offered tuning packages for these cars, either big heads or stroke increases. Chap who runs the AOC has a KV with TSR big heads which is circa 170bhp. But for character this engine really raises a smile, but not the fastest, but easy our warble almost anything on the road!
You can get ellispoids aftermarket for these but it will cost the earth. The poor lighting i recently found out is actually the wiring loom losses. The put out about 900-950 lumen.. for an idea of scale my new MTB lights are 980 lumen, thats not bragging just proving one of the very weak spots of this era of Audi. Other areas to have a looky.
Fuel lines run under the drivers side, mild steel, have a look underneath, either replace with microbore heating pipework or plastic.
These are galvaniazed as well so panels do last but they tend to go at the arches.
Belts, make sure they have been done and all the ancilleries as well.
anything else.. erm.. radiators? Both running? The small one can be expensive but they will run of the big rad only.
Standard brakes as you will find fade very quickly...
super anal ,i think that might be lagos blue... There is a sticker int he boot behind the spare from memory which lists all the cars option codes. A google will give a pile of sites with details on what it came with.

the OEM exhausts last for ages! maybe an excuse for one which will best suit the soundtrack.
rear calipers are notoriously sticky.
Ah but this one isn't OEM unfortunately - from the front pipe to after the middle box it's a pattern system, and the rest is from an unknown source - the system was replaced in 2002 but since then the back box rotted and needed replacement. rear calipers are notoriously sticky.
Still, drove it to work and back today, found that the temperature gauge may be faulty (coolant fine, heaters fine, etc), the CD player needs rewiring to cope with a switched live and the speakers need their wiring sorting out. All in all, not bad for a car that has been stood untouched for 18 months.....

They'll be able to get you the exhaust at their parts club price which should be very similar to GSF except that the genuine Audi pipe will be far superior quality wise.
You don't get the proper warble on a spurious pipe!
Brilliant cars. We put 210k on ours and it pulled like a train.
Replacement parts over the era were 1 x fuel pump, 1 x exhaust and 2 x rear calipers. Everything else was just discs, pads, tyres, filters etc.
Truly bombproof in a way that our V6 A4 couldn't dream of.
