I am still getting used to my 400d and am keen to expand my knowledge and capability. I appreciate the only real way to do this is to go out and take more and more pictures but I am also looking at buying a book/s on photography to help me along. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what titles I should be looking at? I have looked on Waterstones and have come across this, http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/displayP... has anybody read it?

Thanks,

Mike

I'll second that recommendation, I've read a few books now, but none have been as good as that, best book to start off with and refer back to.

The first and only instructional book I bought was Basic Photography by Micahel Langford. He's sadly dead now so the book hasn't been updated for a while which only really shows in the digital sections. It focuses (pardon the pun) much more on techniques than equipment but does cover film a fair bit which may not be of interest to you.

Certainly at one point it was an A-Level textbook, and possibly still is.

Though not essentially suitable for beginners, I can highly recommend: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Take-Your-Photography-Next...

Here's a sample chapter: http://www.georgebarr.com/page6/page19/files/Inter...

Don't forget too, that one piece of essential reading is the instruction booklet that came with the camera. Read it, cover to cover, and practice using all the camera controls. Also, learn how to make all the "standard" adjustments (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure/flash compensation etc) without taking your eye from the viewfinder!

I had this same problem recently, and after some recommendations from here and talkphotography I bought Understanding Exposure from Amazon. Think it was about £10 and it is a fantastic read. Would definitely recommend it.
