I'd agree Penny, but the difference is some people foster for funds.Adoption is a totally giving thing to do.
My earliest memory is being shut in a cupboard.
My earliest happy memory is eating three coloured ice cream. Also happens to be the day I was given to my new family.
Adoption is a life long commitment, and that makes a heck of a difference.
the need for foster parents will always be there, and obviously the "try before you buy" option will be very important to both parents and child.

Having recently completed an adoption (adoption order verbally confirmed - literally 8 days ago, still have the final day at court and hopefully that is us finished), it is definitely no picnic and not to be entered into lightly.We have been blessed with three fine children but would like a fourth, i've always considered adoption and
would like to hear peoples experiences.

The process is by its very nature extremely intrusive, time consuming, a complete ball ache and yes pretty stressful, but I'd say quite rightly so. If you can cope with all the crap of assessment you are likely to be able to cope with an adopted child.
We were assessed by Adoption NCH now called Action for Children - and you can find a local office here: http://www.actionforchildren.org.uk/content.aspx?C... At the very mentally demanding four day workshop we had to attend as part of the assessment, the other potential adoptive parents did mention that their dealings with local authority adoption units were not as positive and they were more exacting as to who they wanted as adoptors, but local authorities have more access to very young babies, whereas an agency like Action for Children deal more often with older children, sibling groups & harder to place children.
I haven't a bad word to say about our social workers, all the better ones do seem to migrate to more satisfying work with adoption charities, which is as good an endorsement as I can offer.
My best mate, his brother and two sisters were all adopted. They are all shining examples of what good parenting can do.
His youngest sister was abused from an early age by her birth parents and was adopted at a 'late' age. While she's still affected by what happened, she's one of the nicest 'young people I've ever met'.

my 3 cousins were adopted, friends have 3 adopted kids(all from the same biological parents )another friend has adopted a boy at 5 yrs old and a friend has fostered 32 special needs children over the years. My wife and I considered adoption and spent many an evening with friends in discussion about doing this, but sadly I thought that we financially and physically would be too much and we never took it up. Sometimes I wish I could have taken this on, but you will need 110% effort to gain the most out of it.Hang in there, the system can be an ordeal, but knowing the look on friends faces, knowing they will have a child to be theres is something you could never envisage.

While not disagreeing with you, seeing the absolute pleasure that my cousin derives from her adopted little girl I can't help thinking that she has benefited from the whole process every bit as much as her daughter.
