Camera detector recommendations
Discussion
Hi,
I have had a Micro Road Pilot for 3 years now and find it very good....but feel the database is often out of date with some sites never being updated.
I update it every few weeks but I find there are a number of cameras it has no record of (and have been in place for years)....and fortunate they're near me and I know where they are....not so great if I am going somewhere new.
I am changing cars soon, and the Micro Road Pilot is staying with the old car...any recommendations for a new - up to date - system???
I only need GPS detection, no SatNav, laser isn't too important - it's illegal you know ;-)
Something:
>>small (Micro is perfect!!)
>>good database
is what I am after.

Yep. Depends on budget but if pinpoint accuracy and very uptodate locations are your thing the best unit out there at the moment in my humble opinion is the pogo alert. Very small and discreet but very customisable. Tell you what camera where speed limit direction of trap etc. Also gives you your average speed in specs zones.
All yours for 250 with a 2 yr warranty. If local to kent area I have the camera/nav version which you could have a look at.

Ps also comes with a detachable laser detector.

Only real issue with all these satellite and speed camera things is that there is to the best of my knowledge no one you can go to to actually try them out and see how they work to compare them. But like I say I am in kent and travel pretty much all over the country was in chelmford today for ex and am in london tomorrow so happy to meet up so you can see how my pogo drive unit works if you wish.
I do around 40-55k miles a year and have done for the last 4yrs and have never recieved a ticket and i put a lot of it down to how accurate the system is.
I am a huge fan of their product. I tried a friends RA a year or two ago and it was a disaster simply didnt compare.

jimmyb that's a great offer as I work in Fenchurch Street, but too generous...verbal recommendation is good enough for me...don't waste your day floating around the City demo-ing kit!! Get home early!!!!!
I was thinking between RA (because they sell a lot and it has online sych) or Pogo (website was convincing in that the database seemed 100% accurate).
If you're doing 55k a year and are happy compared to my 10k then that's a good enough endorsement to give it a whirl.
Even if the Pogo is as good as my Roadpilot I would be happy enough to try something else for the hell of it.
Pretty colour screen too...not like my green Roadpilot that matches nothing in the car!!

whats the routing and maps like on the pogo jimmyb? is it as good as (say) the tom tom?
In all honesty I think I would say no not yet. The issue with the pogo drive is that for pogo it's a new product/area they only started doing them to the best of my knowledge around a year or two ago so there have been teething problems. My first one had an issue cant remember what exactly but didnt function properly. Called them and they said i could either swing past their office on the day and they would swap for another or they would send one out to me for the following day and have mine collected. I simply swung by. The next one worked fine though being used to a tomtom i thought it had an issue so called and asked if they could send me another which i could run alongside to compare which they were quite happy to do.
Used both and to be fair it wasnt actually a fault it was as i say just me being stupid. Early teething problem was screen brightness was unadjustable meaning at night you were blinded by it but they corrected that so that now there are only a few things they really need to work on /correct as i see it.
You can do almost everything a tomtom can do except travel via function doesnt exist (yet) umm and cant remember what else really pretty complete package now.
Fairly quick to auto reroute, you can go to address or postcode or place on map. You can save loads of favourite destinations (handy for me saves me having to put in lots of different postcodes 3 screen taps and you are there basically)
The important thing to remember is that it is an ongoing developement product so as and when mods/improvements come along they automatically update your satnav when you update the speed cam side of things. Bear in mind that you get euro maps and uk with it and any new roads built get auto updated to it rather than having to buy a new card.
Any other questions feel free to ask and as i say if anyone wants to see the pogo drive and are reasonably local to kent then im happy for you to have a look at mine as I drive all over the country all week.
Hi can you help clear up something for me. The Pogo Allert you describe only works as a speed camera detector according to their website but the Pogo Drive does Satnav and scamera detection or am I missing something?
If it is the Drive you are describing how does it compare in size to say the road angel pro?

Umm yeah my description is of the pogo drive.
Pogo drive is sat nav and speed cam detector but with no laser alert..
Pogo alert is speed cam only with laser alert.
Size comparison hmm its tricky to describe the size . About the same thickness as a nokia n95/96.
Looking at photos of the RA pro i would say about the same size if not a little smaller.

Also have pocketgpsworld.co.uk database on my Garmin i3 as backup.

The Novus Rider £99 or Novus Alpha £149 are a good option, good database and free database updates for life.
I have tested both and they work a treat, 3 year and 2 year warranty.

If you have £1500 to spend try Stinger... Its about the best system I have ever used, even if you do need a second morgage to buy it..

Actually looks quite interesting however do have concerns about the possible legal implications as the law will know what it can do and may convict on the grounds of assumpion that you jammed a laser/radar signal since being a motorist you are more guilty and evil than satan himself who smells of roses.
