Where to take missus on a day out in south wales?

Southerndown is a good suggestion! was there last summer for one of those random big beach parties! Im thinking perhaps a nice drive up brecons or down to coast and find a good pub for food? my car isnt much being a 2003 1.4 golf in poverty spec but hey it goes!

Rhossilli bay is a bit bleak this time of year but stunning.
Ogmore and surrounding area are good for walks etc. Have not been to the pubs for a few years but one at Southerndown and by Ogmore Castle.
If you like walking then a trip up the Neath valley to the Ystradfellte falls, serious boots required though. And waterproofs..... and legs that work for a good few hours. Perhaps not this time of year though!
Beacons. Loads to go and see and do. Quite a few pubs but the place is huge so one of my favorites is the Red Lion at Llanafan Fawr. Bit of a dap but the roads are worth it.
Can think of a few more given time.

Rhayader and the Elan valley. The dams are superb when the H2O is pouring over them.

My suggestion would be the lakes over at the Brecon Beacons national park

mate i've been down there by getting lost and it certainly opened my eyes thats for sure, bloody awful!
Big Pit.
May not sound like a great idea, but it's an amazing place.
A proper, preserved deep mine.
You get to go 300 feet underground and have a guided tour of a mine preserved exactly as it was the day it closed.
Plenty of stuff to look at above ground, too.
We went in the morning, did the underground stuff (takes over an hour, including getting kitted up with helmet, light, oxygen supply, handing over 'contraband' etc), had lunch in cafe and wandered around the above ground bits, too.
Definitely recommended.

Just a hint if you do go - don't be tempted to put money into the collection boxes scattered around the place - this money goes back to government coffers. Spend it in the cafe instead, as this goes to ex-miners charities.

The wife is from South wales, her inlaws live near Dowlais, they run a garage there. We used to live in Usk after we moved back from Cornwall then we moved to Oxfordshire.
I've spent alot of time in South Wales and i've got alot of time for the place, i'm at the MS in Cardiff every wales game for work anyway so with that and the inlaws being there i know it pretty well.
