"A man who leapt into an icy river to save a drowning woman spent 30 minutes clinging with her to a branch in freezing conditions before they were saved by firefighters. The rescue took place as much of Britain was hit by powerful storms that caused chaos at the weekend.

Jason Pardoe, 34, dialled 999 after hearing the screams of a woman struggling in the swollen waters as he walked home from a night shift at 3am. Despite gale-force winds and heavy rain, he dived fully clothed into the River Wye. It is believed that the woman either slipped or was blown into the river. "
