For the US you need to sign up to the visa waiver scheme online at least 3 days before arriving.

The US Visa Waiver scheme has changed, you now need to fill out an on line application before you go, do it now so it is done and dusted.

Don't know about Mexico.

I believe you can queue up at the airport when you arrive in Mexico for a Visa, i think it costs about $25 (from memory)- in fact I seem to remember that you actually pay on the way out of Mexico?! (Might be wrong, I did drink a lot of Tequila and Corona whilst I was out there).

The US, you don't need a Visa, but there are new rules in place since the New year which mean you have to be deemed eligible for their Visa Waiver Scheme. You must do this at least 3 days before you travel.

What if you need to get on a flight today or tomorrow to the US, how does it work for that kind of situation?

Just don't ask the border security guys how many terrorists these new measures have caught. They don't find it (or anything) funny.
