Scarf-wearing etiquette!

The OH tells me that it’s fashionable for a bloke to knot his scarf these days. This is achieved by folding the scarf so it’s half as long as normal and then, starting at the back of one's neck, passing the looped end around one side of one’s neck and the not-looped end around the other side and then passing the not-looped end through the looped end at the front of one’s neck. That seems easy enough. However, given that shirts, coats, etc. all overlap from the left if you’re a man and from the right of you’re a women (as seen from the wearer’s perspective), is there a similar rule with scarves when knotting them? In other words, is there a specific side that each end should be passed around at the beginning of the scarf-installation process depending on whether you’re a man or a woman, to give a ‘male’ or ‘female’ appearance when worn?

Main thing is to make sure that the scarf is long enough to be able to do said knot. One of mine isn't.

Actually, I'm a big girl and I tend to just loop it back once around my neck

I'd go with the knotted approach, nice and tight.

That way, its easier for a passing, large, right thinking chap to garot you with.

I do wear my scarf in the manner described, but hadn't thought at all about any left/right bias according to gender.

I bought a scarf recently and faced the same dilema and wondered the exact same thing. On asking I was suggested the same knot. I even googled how I was supposed to wear it. I found that that style is called a european loop but there seems to be no mention of orientation.

There are more important things to worry about for sure but if you took the approach to only asking questions about the big stuff it would be an odd world. Imagine a news reader with a scarf tied round his head in a rambo style running vox pops because its inaugeration day dontcha know! I bet he would wish hed asked.
