if you look at the back of the pc it accepts a power cable like a laptop one.
the bloke says he runs it of a laptop power supply between 15 and 17 volts
Ok, so what powers it in the car? If you have a power unit supplied that runs it in the car then that runs off 12v, and what I suggested will power that. If it doesn't come with a power supply, and you need to purchase one then I suppose a normal laptop 'power brick' will do, but it will run on 240Vac, so you would also need a 12vdc to 240vac inverter for the car

sorry mate we are at cross purposes!!!!
it runs from a 12 volt power supply in the car, but i want to power it up in my lounge to do the programming i want to do on it and upgrading stuff etc
but i understand what you are saying as the car is 12volt DC i am sure the pc runs 12volt dc power supply as it is.

Don't think so.

If you wish to power a 12v unit in the house, then my first suggestion is valid.
think we are
i dont need a rectifier a laptop power supply should do the job thats 230volt ac in and 15-17 volts dc out.
Ok, in the spirit of a common affection for great rumbly V8 cars I shall try again.

1. The unit you have bought is second hand (by the look of the Ebay ad)and has a socket on the back for what looks like a laptop type power unit.
2. Your seller says that the PC runs on 15 - 17v.
3. The ad does not say that the power unit that supplies this voltage is supplied with the unit. If it is then this power unit will run on the cars 12v(in reality 13.8v).
4. If a power unit is not supplied then
A) the seller wishes to keep this unit in his car for his own reasons (in which case you would have to source a replacement),or
B) the PC runs directly from the cars 12v(13.8v).
So, to run the unit in the house,
A) If the unit will run directly off 12v(13.8v) then the POWER SUPPLY I suggested first will do the job (this is the unit I bought for the exact same purpose - running/setup of my CarPc in the house before fitting in the car).
B) If the unit runs on 15 - 17v and comes supplied with the necessary power unit which in turn runs off 12v(13.8v) then again the previously mentioned POWER SUPPLY will suffice.
C) If the unit runs on 15 - 17v and does not come with the necessary power unit, then you would probably be able to get a laptop power brick of sufficient voltage/wattage to run the PC - this brick will of course be 240vac - ok for the house but not for the car. For this you also need to get a 12v(13.8v) to 240Vac inverter to power the 'brick' and hence the PC.

In which case, the POWER SUPPLY first mentioned will do. But if you really want a laptop 'brick'
take your pick
