Since I'm currently in my last year of A-levels and I'm off to uni next year to do physics I find myself drawn towards Cardiff. Since I live in Wales I get half of my course fees paid, which is nice, and it's close to home but not so close that I'll have the parents popping up every minute of the day. Just wondering if there are any PHers who went to Cardiff uni and your thoughts on the experience. Any PHers from other universities are welcome to post and tell me if the uni you went to is miles better than Cardiff and that I should go there instead 
I want to go there and do Journalism and Film, or something similar,(Im in the first year of 6th form atm), and everywhere I've asked has only given positive reviews! Unfortunately, living in England, I don;t get the fee benefit if I do go, which is unfortunate

Have you been to look around? I went there, the course sounded really interesting but I just didn't like the Uni or the area. Not quite sure why, it just didn't click with me.
I'd recommend heading down there to an open day and having a wander around, see what you think. I made the mistake of applying to my Uni's before going to look at them, and actually only liking half of the 6 I applied to.

I went to cardiff and it was very good. The central location is great and most of the halls are good. It's a lively student community, even in the second and third year as most live in around roath/cathays. Big student union and some decent clubs in cardiff. It was nice and cheap when I was there too which is nice. The city is small enough to easily get around but has lots to offer and not just your standard identikit city shops.
I really enjoyed my time there, as did most of the people I know. Plus if it's cheap you should got for it, you won't regret going there.

rfn's right. You have to get a good feel for a place.
That said, it's a great Uni and not a bad place to do physics at all from what I hear.
Cardiff as a city has a good range of facilities, but is small enough to get from one side to the other easily.
Nothing to stop you having a brilliant time there.

Thought I better give some negatives for balance. The binmen seemed to go on strike alot (2000 - 2004), and sometimes there were seriously large piles of rubbish in the streets for weeks.
It rained for 5 months when I first got there.
Avoid the city centre at the weekend as it turns into a sea of cheap gold jewellery and fat white girls in tracksuits or burberry.

I went to Swansea, and a few of my mates went to Cardiff... they loved it there and some have ended up living there post uni. I love Cardiff it has everything... My friend is there now doing journolism and she bloody loves it........................................................................
and she is tasty, which is another point, loads and loads of fresh putang in Cardiff uni, in fact there was quite a bit in Swansea... for what its worth I went to Swansea rather than Cardiff as Swansea is a Campus based uni and I think you are a lot more involved in student life than with the diffent multi campus uni as it were in Cardiff (both uni's)
either way you will have an amazing time!

My brother went to Cardiff... The place seems nice and I might be going there (but the requirement is a little above my realistic goals).
I'd say it's a pretty good choice, plus if you go home in the night, you can get some pretty good times down the old M4
I'll probably be going to Swansea for Economics and Geography though.

Swansea is a great university.
If you can get a flat in the Student Village near Killay, do it.
There's a small shop, takeaway and decent bar on site, plus a pub opposite the main entrance and a few more in Killay, 5-10 mins walk away.
Bit of a drag into the main campus, but buses are laid on - I used to do it by bike to burn off the ale.
I loved Swansea so much, I stayed there for a few years after leaving Uni. Only moved when I married Mrs 75 and she was looking for a job in the home counties.

Funny you should mention Killay, 75.
Was doing a Geography project on Swansea and Killay is the richest / least deprived area by far... The houses there

yes House 36 right near the launderette,spar and student village dinner... attic room, it was massive... loved it... No disapointment ever in going to Swansea... Great uni, and the women are fast...
Ahhh, I was over in one of the 'new' blocks. Not new now, though - pushing 15 years old, probably.A bit flat-pack Wimpey home, but they were very nice when new.
Do the rooms have 'net access these days? - in my day we had a portakabin with 4 or 5 green screen terminals with clicky IBM keyboards for our access.
Used to get a pizza from the takeaway and a pack of cans from the shop and spend hours in there on Usenet groups and IRC chat.
