5.45 finish a meal in the kitchen and retire to the lounge. 6.15 Mrs Grumpy asks if I've moved her hand bag, it was in the kitchen. Er, no.
Upshot is, some scroat has come in through the closed but unlocked patio door and had it away with her handbag containing purse, mobile, keys etc.

Seems to take a while to sink in, almost slow motion. Take a look around
Where are my Mitsubishi keys, my van keys, my phone? all usually left by the bread bin on the worktop. Come to think of it, wheres the Mitsubishi? Only and old L200 daily drive, nothing fancy, all gone.

Now Mrs Grumpy only had £15 cash and a couple of credit cards that were cancelled within 15 minutes, the mobile was pay as you go and at least 10 years old, no self respecting scroat would be seen dead with.

My phone is contract and was off and you need a pin to turn it on.

The van keys however are a different matter. On the he van key ring were, my office keys, lock-up keys, workshop keys. Now we are talking major problems.

Called the police who were there within 15 minutes and couldn't have been more helpful, SOCO were there within 30 mins.

What a mess, I can't contact people, no mobile so no numbers, I have a "sort of" back up list, but this is in the draw in the office that I have no transport to get to and if I did I couldn't get into anyway because I don't have any keys.

Lets not forget I have a van parked outside the house that some scroat has the keys to, can't leave that there over night or it will be gone.

Anyway, after MUCH hassle and running around I am now on the way home with a spare key to the van when I realise that in order to get the Mitsubishi off the drive they would have had to move the van, as it is my custom to park the van across the drive.

Yep, they did and can you believe they left the keys in the ignition, result.

I later find out that a police van "pulled" my truck, my truck stops, police van stops, truck reverses at full tilt into front of van and speeds off. Police van goes nowhere.

As I've been typing this the phone has just rang and a guy informs me that he has just found my wife's handbag with her keys and "other stuff" in.
She had work related things and the like in there, another result.

I've been wanting to get another daily drive for some time so as long as the insurers don't mess me about, no great loss there.

I should be more worked up about all this but somehow I'm not.

A bit of a wake up call though.

What a pain in the bum. Hope it gets sorted quickly. My paranoia always makes me lock all doors and downstairs windows.

A wake up call indeed, glad everyone is ok, it really hits home when you realise someone has been in your house while you have been in the other room.

yikes

Always worrying to hear first-hand stories of breaking & entering, at least you're both ok. Now, onto the important stuff - what you replacing the L200 with? biggrin

Has your van got your work address sign written on it? or were there any invoices / delivery notes in the L200 that might have your work address on?

I know youve probably already thought about that - but just incase you got caught up in the excitement.

I feel your pain mate. We had a scare last night when the missus saw someone creeping about in our back garden. She had the patio doors open cos she was cooking and we're guessing guy was waiting till she left the room, to run in and take stuff...

The rozzers came round tonight and pointed out that laptop bags, expensive cameras were sitting about in the dining room fully viewable through the patio doors...

We were lucky as she saw him and shouted, he ran off through the back garden gate. No harm done.

Takes something like this to realise there are opportunist theives waiting to pounce.

Hope you get it all sorted soon.

Take care folks...

bds!

But if I read it right, all they've got is your mobile and the L200 - your wife got her handbag back, and they don't have your van/keys/office keys?

I remember the parents of a friend of my brothers were done over in a similar way while they were watching TV in the living room and left the side door open. This was in 1980, it's not a new thing.

I am paranoid about this - if I am not in a room with an outside door I will always make sure the door is closed and locked, too many opportunist scum around ranting

Did they get any prints off the van?

Wonder if burglaries go up particularly in January when people still have all their new stuff out from Christmas. And also the fact that now everyone is so skint some could turn to desperate measures!

F*ckers. If only you had landmines in your back garden it would never have happened. We might have had the first pikey scumbag in space though.

Glad you have got most of your stuff back though. Sorting all the nonsense out afterwards is the biggest pain in the bum of any theft.

The Elise is not kept at this address although my garage is secure with it's own dedicated alarm as well as the house system.

This is why I was so relived when I found the keys had been left in the van after they had moved it.
