This whole 'first black person to.......' thing

Getting rather annoyed with this now.
On the news this morning (beeb), news person says 'something is happening today that hundereds of millions of people didn't think would happen, the inauguration of America's first black president...'.
Why oh why do they have to keep mentioning the 'first black ...' line, its worse than when Lewis Hamilton won the F1 title ffs!

I think that its something to be proud of. Basically we (white people) did a lot of bad things in this lifetime - and even worse if you go back 100+ years.
To show such a level of change in attitude is fantastic IMO. However you are right, in an ideal world with an ideal history - skin colour would never come into it.

It's an event many thought would never happen and that many throughout history suffered to make happen .I just hope he's as good as the whole world seems to think he is. He's got a lot of difficult work to do. I don't care what colour of skin he has I just hope he's up to the job for all our sakes, because in order for this 'global recession' to end America needs to show signs of recovery first.

What frustrates me is that I know more about his Kenyan background (but very little about the white half of his heritage 
) than I do about his policies. It seems to be the first thing the media focus upon; to my mind it should be an interesting sidebar, but not the main focus of the report.

However I haven't heard Obama make a point of singling out black Americans for anything.

Referring to Obama being the first 'black president' etc etc in reality doesn't celebrate his achievement i.e. becoming president of the US, but puts him in a box, seperated from the other US presidents.
I find qualifying anyone as a 'first white/black man/woman' etc to be very patronising and a deflection from the main point i.e. the achievement.
The achievement here is winning the vote to become president.
Being black/brown whatever isnt an achievement given he was born that way.
Is it more of an achievement, given his origins !? I'd say not on the basis that the race issue is given a lot more press and hence emphasis, than other as and more important qualities which play a greater part in the achievement.

It's getting on my wick as well. It's just such a shame they can't be more magnanimous and say that colour isn't importabt. That's what has been preached for so long, so for everyone to go on about a new dawn and how much it means to black people and first black president etc etc just underlines the divide that shouldn't exist.
Besides, for lots of very wealthy black lawyers and doctors it's hardly a new dawn for them, they have been living successful lives for decades now
