Hi!

Have had the XJR for a month or so now, and it's been great in most respects - however I notice a rev-related rhythmic squeak from the engine bay when it's cold. Sounds like a squeaky bearing. It doesn't seem to be affecting the driving, but usually takes 10 to 15 mins to go away and sometimes longer. My garage tell me 'all the Rs do that', and didn't offer any solution (though I'd think I could push them harder with money...).

Anyone know what the source of this apparently common squeak is, and whether I can stop it somehow? It's a tad embarassing driving around making the wrong sort of noise every day, as it usually stops just about the time I arrive at work...

Cheers!

mmmmm, a tough one this without seeing/hearing it.

Sounds like it could be the waterpump showing signs of wear.

Anyone else's thoughts?

Not heard of a known squeak on the XJR, nor experienced it. Is it continuous like a fan belt slipping or on/off like a compressor?

Not a slipping belt, but a 'squeak - squeak - squeak - squeak'... increases rate but reduces volume as revs rise under load, and disappears above about 2300rpm. Particularly noticeable on the overrun with the engine settled at 900-1000rpm or so. Odd indeed, and goes completely once engine is thoroughly warmed up.

Perhaps a return to the garage is in order. Maybe by coincidence an XKR was started up as I was picking mine up after some unrelated work, and was making a similar noise - made the "they all do that..." thing a little more plausible...

This is all good info, thanks!

Put baby powder on the supercharger belt! Sounds stupid i know, but fixes it. Other wise remove belt clean rust off pulley and replace belt, very tight hurts your hands etc. powder much easier.

TSB ( Technicial Service Bulletin ) issued regarding this, had problems with the belt/ tensioner on the super charger belt, and if I remember correctly something to do with alignment of A/C compressor . Ypu'll need to try to get hold of the bulletin, hope this helps.

had the same problem supercharger belt replaced. i tried baby powder after my local dealer said to try that first and see how long that would keep the noise away. noise came back after a week, belt was worn and needed replacing at 68K.

I had problems with this on mine last year, seems that Jaguar were supplying different types of pulleys, some nylon, some metal, some with lips, some not, The good guys at Jagutek sorted mine out, but not without a lot of chopping and changing, the belts come in different lengths too depending on the tensioner and pulley type, its not very well documented I'm afraid

yes If it's the belt that's noisy talc works a treat. If the noise comes back after a while you've proved it's the belt so fit a new one.

I had that and changed the supercharger pulley tensioner assembly and it was gone. It's not too expensive and british parts did them. I changed nearly every pulley and Jaguar stealers told me it was the supercharger itself. I changed the supercharger with one from ebay and guess what. It was feck all to do with the supercharger.....c0nts.

Thanks very much! I figured it must have something to do with the supercharger, as this seems to be an 'R' phenomenon. Had already tried WD40 on all the bearings I could see, but in fact the squeak is slightly too slow to be one of them really. A belt problem fits much better - I'll try the baby powder tomorrow morning and hope for some success...

Puff of powder, noise completely gone and entertaining explosion of powder from front of engine where puff was a little excessive... Nice one!

Looks like I'll be off for a new belt at some point then. At least I can drive to work in peace now though...

Cheers guys
