VW polo Mk4 1999 petrol clutch change
Discussion
hi all,
my brother has asked me if i wanted to chage his clutch for him, of course my inital reply was, err no thanks!
but just wondering how hard it is? the haynes book seems to think it best to remove engine and gearbox complete, or dismantle half the engine bay and front panel!
Is this job feasible on the drive, or should I send him off to a garage? hes says I can have the car for a few days, to do some other jobs at the same time (dampers).
I'm a fairly comtetent mechanic, but just don't want to end up with the car stuck on my drive with the engine hanging out!!
Thanks for any help

I did this twice on my M reg polo... and once on my 52 plate polo... (both are pretty much the same chassis)
You can remove the gearbox and leave the engine inplace, but you might have to undo the drivers side engine mount and lower the engine an inch or two....
You have to remove all of the gear linkages, starter, gearbox mount and stabiliser and completely remove both driveshafts.... (you can do it without but its a pain in the arse if you leave them on!)
Then its simply a case of popping the box out..
Its a pain in the backside getting the gearbox lined back up on the spigot, but once its located back in again its fine...
Give yourself a complete day and you should be ok!
