Obama smart first move

Very clever move suspending the soon to start Gauntanamo Bay hearings for six months.
I "suppose" it's to give him and his team time to assess the evidence and how it's been acquired but it really is very clever. Goes some way to appease the opponents of G.Bay without worrying it's supporters too much. Of course, six months down the line he might decide to continue the hearings on the 9/11 five but as a first move - very clever and the act of a true politician

It is just that the guy has promissed so much and your thread was "smart first move" whereas "smart first non move' may have been more accurate.

It was a very smart first move. And no, the trials won't resume in their current form, ever. Simply because the military tribunals they have right now are nothing but a kangaroo court. Obama is a lawyer, one who respects the law. Whatever form the trials will resume in, they will be more fair, guaranteed.

Obama is undoing a lot of Bush's damage very quickly. I love this guy.

Torture - abolished.
Renditions and secret prison program - abolished.
Guantanamo trials - suspended and to be done differently in the future
Guantanamo closure - in the works.
Federal funding of stem cell research - resumed.
Abortion policy - reversed.
Executive branch meddling in judicial branch - ended or severely curtailed, you choose.
Lobbyists' influence - severely curtailed.
Politicization of hiring and firing = severely curtailed.
Leading by example by capping salaries - done.
Focus on Aghanistan/Al Qa'eda and disengagement from Iraq - in the works.
Olive branch to European and Muslim allies - in the works.

That's just after 3 days in the office. Wow.

Those are just the ones off the top of my head. I look forward to the US joining the International Criminal Court again, from which it had been withdrawn under the disastrous Bush regime.

No need to bicker or extend this into a 100-page thread, just wait 6 months and then we will see whether I am right or not.

Remember, that is for use of federal money only. Private funding (which is most IIRC)for such research is not under the pervue of the President.

On the stem cell issue (scientific question), has there recently been another "place" from which to obtain cells for this research? I thought I saw something regarding that recently.

Why do you say that? Most reasonable estimates put actual terrorists at Gitmo at between 30 and 50 out of the 600-odd people there? Guilty because you say so?
