Have you tried buying a cheap day return, or whatever they're called these days? Always used to be cheaper than a single.

Hoops I jump through getting from the northeast to London are usually booking singles and breaking the ticket journey at an unpopular stop.

EG, Darlington-Peterborough arrive 9.45 then Peterborough-Kings Cross depart Peterborough at 9.46. Allowing you to stay on one train but pay less.

Its very do-able, atleast from london to liverpool. Ive just got my tickets from liverpool to essex via london for 22.50 on way down and from euston to liverpool for 6.60 I have a railcard thingy though, but that only knocks 10% off I think. This was all on national rail.co.uk

This is with London Midland. It's (a lot) slower than Virgin, but a realistic price

I just looked this trip up in the great book of Journeys. This is what they suggested..biggrin
MK to Swindon by charabang = £2.50.
Swindon to Hereford by shire horse and cart= free+ all the hay you can eat.
Hereford to Shrewsbury by tandem =£5 + someone to talk to.
Shrewsbury to Liverpool by coracle.= free.Fishing will be good but your arms will be f**ked by the end of the journey.
Time of journey 5 days. It's the long way round but you won't get it any cheaper....biggrin
