But does such a thing as 'track day insurance' exist in the UAE and if so can anyone recommend a provider? Before anyone asks my standard insurance doesn't cover 'private roads' so won't work. Thanks!!

Nope, there's no such thing. The local insurance industry is in the stone ages, here. They won't even ensure cars over 7 years old on a fully comp basis. There's no logic in it, they just don't do it.

As a long shot, you could try a specialist insurance company in the UK that looks at the assets of UK citizens overseas. I tried insuring an older car that way a couple of years ago and they said they would start looking into it, but weren't ready to insure me at the time. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure who it was I called - I think it was most likely Chubb Insurance. Try them or try googling other specialist UK insurers.

Slightly off topic but what are the facts about the rumoured law on 7+ year cars being outlawed?

In typical Dubai fashion, RTA announced a few months ago that all cars over 20 years old would be outlawed (ie scrapped or exported), over 15 years old could not be reregistered (which to all intents and purposes means exactly the same thing), and over 10 years old could not be transferred to a new owner (ie you would have to hang onto it for another five years before getting rid of it). "Classic cars" would be exempted, but no-one knew what this actually meant.

Nobody told these muppets that half of Europe has cars 10 years old and in perfectly good condition. If they wanted to save the whales, they might merely have put a tax on ten litre SUVs but, no, that would be too simple a solution, right?

As the regulation came into being on 1 Jan 2009, the RTA realised they had monumentally f***ed up (again), and that suddenly there was nowhere for these 10/15/20 year old cars to go. Plus the RTA have no idea what constitutes a classic car. Just prior to 1 Jan, someone I know was denied reregistration on a 1982 911 SC on the basis that it was "not a classic", (and conveniently ignoring the fact that the reg was not yet in force at the time).

And plus the fact that there were perfectly decent 10 year old cars around with reasonable emissions. Some senior muppet had to eat humble pie and declare there would be a review of the regs and they may be revisited later this year. Here's hoping the draft law dies quietly.

Meanwhile, those of us who love E30 M3s, Integrales, Carrera 3.2s, and even honest family workhorses in perfectly good condition have no idea what to do next.

No - this is not correct.

I just bought, registered and insured a '93 Mercedes W124 E500 on a fully comp policy. I had no problem at all.

Fair enough. It was a couple of years ago that I tried. Which insurance company did you use?

Also, what did RTA say when you registered the car? Any issues?

Cool car, by the way.

No - they didn't say a word. Did everything at the RTA office in Al Aweer - so guess they know the laws re the older cars there better than others.

I forget the name of the insurance company now - not one of the names from over here though (not AXA or similar).

Harris - question for you mate.

Mich Cups - do they 'confuse' people when you get the car registered?

No, not at all. As long as there's sufficient tread on them, they won't have any cause for complaint.

Ok good.

Need to renew my tyres and thought I'd give Cups a go (if I can get any!)

James,

I can give you a couple of contacts for the Cups.

Central trading - 050 4796568
Very professional and good advice - right up to driving into the workshop to find they had Pilot Sports, not Cups. 30 days to get them in, but did put me in contact with...

Al Shami Tyres - 0506129047
Had tyres in stock, fitted them quickly but word of advise, don't let them do your wheel alignment.
And another word of advise, don't let Porsche do it either (long story....)

Cheers Steve - noted.

I had it done at the Pirelli place on SZD - seems to be ok. Completely got rid of the understeer I was getting. going to have it re-checked though at Alex Renner's place when after it comes back from service next week.

I've had a few recommendations for him - heard anything?

Alex is by far the best. And my sponsor for the TCC... biggrin

No seriously, he is miles better than Nabooda. I am so glad my car is no longer under warranty as I am not forced to go back to that dump. They once tried to charge me 14 hours labour for a simple geo set up (they had never done one before). Alex will admit he is learning race car craft, and he has only just purchased all the laser thingumybobs, but he will not mess you around.

Sorry for the thread hijack OP!

That's interesting as i was unable to get fully comp cover on a '85 911 in 07. i managesd to find a broker in the UK (Lockton) who offered fully comp (including oman) less third party cover so i took that out with the third party cover being covered here. When the insurance came up for renewal at the end of last year I renewed on the same basis as I was not aware the local insurers had changed their policy.

Resurrecting an old thread.

Trying to get comp insurance on a 15 year old Lancia. Usual st from the insurance companies. Tried Lockton's local office and they say they can't help.

Anyone have a contact overseas (preferably UK) where I can get comprehensive insurance excl third party (I am taking 3 p here with Axa)?

Thanks,

Harris

There's a guy on ADPCC 'Desertevo' (John) who has a Lancia, might be worth asking him who he got it sorted with smile

Thanks Matt. Actually I've already put a call in to Onno LeRoy who runs the Lancia registry, so he will no doubt know if John (I think he's the red integrale which is being prepared for Red Line Challenge) has got fully comp insurance.

Will post the results as soon as I know.
