456 or 308 + something sensible?
Discussion
Wondering if anyone could help with a query I've got. Apologies if this has already been dealt with on a previous thread.
I've got about £30-35 to spend and want to trade up from my Boxster S to my first Ferrari. Thing is, we're shortly going to be joined by sprog number 1 so buying a 2-seater as an only car is not an option.
I'm toying with one of two ideas:
(1) Use a 456 as our only car until the kid(s) get too big to fit in the back (we do about 7,000-8,000 miles a year).
(2) Have something fairly sensible and cheap(ish) to run and have a 308 for weekends and the odd blast (say about 3,000 miles a year in the 308).
I know that the 456 is costly to run, even for a Ferrari, but I prefer to use my cars rather than have them sitting in the garage. I also like the idea of having a Ferrari that the kids can enjoy too, even if only for a few years.
I was wondering what to budget for on the basis of using a 456 for 7-8,000 miles per year and/or a 308 for 3,000 miles per year. I'm thinking about £7,000 for the 456 and £3,000 for the 308 - am I even close?
Also wondering how badly putting 7-8,000 miles per year onto a 456 would affect its resale value.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers

YES!
lol
I go the second route myself I have a Lotus Esprit and a Lamborghini Diablo...
Then for day to day pootling around etc I have a Rover 114 (Metro!!!) It cost me sod all to buy, is sod all to insure and sod all to run.
I don't give a t0ss what anyone 'thinks of me' in it as I know what I have in my garage and I don't care what people I don't know think about me anyway!
For me personally, were I in your shoes, I'd get a 328 and a Fiesta
(That's not based on financial considerations / running costs... It's purely on the "what I'd like to have" factor
)

Yes, yes, I know it's a 308 in Magnum but for fear regurgitating online cliches... I've heard the 328 was generally a bit more 'sorted' and to anyone but the hardened anorak, looks near enough the same as a 308!

What I'm about to say is sacrilege to some but forget a Fezza (for now anyway) and buy a BMW M6; it has all the power, luxury and safety you could want.
You're kidding right? - an M6 Vs. a Ferrari, they're in no way shape or form even in the same league. A 328 has amazing presence, steering feel and is a Ferrari, a true throughbred - WTF is an M6 compared to that? Don't get me wrong I love bimmers, getting an M3 soon myself but it'll never be a Ferrari and I'll not kid myself that it is!Schermerhorn said:

The 308`s are fantastic little cars, cheap to run, easiy to repair and a great drivers car. I found the M6 to be just another german coupe , very good but lacking soul (very much like the AMG).

I`m currently loking for a super car and had a drive round in a 550 and they are a very capable car but lack the practicality of the 456.
Schermerhorn, how many miles have you done in a 308 a 456 or a M6 or do you own one of each ?
308 = Timeless piece of classic design. An eternal iconic classic which thousands upon thousands of people have dreamed of getting to drive one day. Immortalised in a television show and from a marque embodying the pinnacle of performance, engineering, aspiration and achievement. Photographed everywhere they go by admirers and guaranteed to put a smile on the face of every passer-by and owner alike.
M6 = Dodgy Motorway in the Midlands that's so bad they had to build a new one!

Take your pick...

Thanks everyone for the comments, good to know that there are plenty of people enjoyhing their 308s out there!
I've been lucky enough to drive both a 308 and a 328 (a good few hundred miles in each) and loved the 308, whilst for some reason the 328 didn't have quite the same effect on me. Don't know why, I still think they're a fabulous car, maybe I was just hungover that weekend. I did like the noise it made though...
Do people think I'm in the right region on the running costs? And what about depreciation: would it seriously take a chunk off the resale value if I put 8,000 miles a year on a 456, even if I kept it properly serviced and maintained?

IMHO
Don't buy a 456 if you're concerned about resale value as they will be all over the place and are still coming down...
Do buy a 30(2)8 if you are concerned about resale value as it has 'found it's value' and temporary financial blips aside, will always maintaint that value at the very least.
How much your mileage will affect that is more for the 308 owners to say...
You could always look for a relatively high mileage car (20/30/40k+) to start with yet is still a GOOD car. Buy low sell low and all that. If you bought a 1500 mile car then your mileage WILL affect it imho.

Thanks for the reply EDF (nice fleet by the way). Think you may have a point about the 456. What is it about 4 seater Ferraris and depreciation? I think that the 456 is one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever made and can't believe it's value is dipping below the £30K mark.
Not too worried about resale if I went the 308 route. It would just be my weekend toy so I wouldn't be looking at selling it for a long time!

They've started in the £20k's (and below!) for some time! You can get ridicaulous quanities of car for your money with a 456.
+ + OT + +
I would also say the same with a Lotus Esprit - GT3, S4S and V8! (or the late Giugiaro Turbos like mine)
In all fairness there are lots of cars that fall into that category - £7k Elises... TVRs, Nobles etc etc etc All have performance and looks that belie their price!
You would be limiting your liabilities by going down the route of a 308 + something sensible. My 308 GT4 (4 seats) has cost <£1500 a year to run, but the previous one was >£2000 a year. See my profile for where the money went. A lot depends on getting a good one. The main downside for me of 308 ownership is not being able to use it as much as I'd like in the winter.
I've also driven a 456, even by today's standards they are still a deeply impressive machine and are available at silly money. The problem I see is that if it's your only car then things are more likely to go wrong, and when they do you will need to get it fixed in a hurry which is likely to be expensive.
