With regard to the Ted Baker's wearing out quickly.....I guess it depends on your definition of quickly!
Of the 3 TB suits I own, the 2 bought 3 years ago are starting to wear a little thin in places. The other is only 2 years old but is still in good nick.
My opinion is that I'd have expected the suits to last longer than 3 years given their price. For comparison the cheap suit I bought from River Island 5 years ago has only just shown the same amount of wear.

I have a Charles Tyrwhitt suit and its quite nice but my favourite is the Hackett suit
Although for my normal fat days M&S suits accommodate my girth quite well

Thankfully yes they are. Working in the city was a painful experience when the dotcom boom meant the banks went casual in a bid to retain staff.
It was emant to be smart casual:-
The posh Brtish looked like they were going gardening. (well if Grandpa's fairisle was good enough for seervice in the navy tis good enough for me sort of thing.)
The not so posh British threw collections of labels at themselves.
The Germans wore some (to our eyes at least) very strange colour combos together, they also wore their "funky" weekend glasses.
The Russians...... enough said.
The Italians dressed well, and then were to be found contantsly preening in any nearby piece of plate glass.
The French wore suits and sneered.
The Indian interns wore primark. (or similar
And the Americans wore button doens and Chinos, although it was closest to what smart casual was meant to signify, it was effectively as much a uniform as a suit.
And everyone commented on what everyone else was wearing.....
This by the way was the blokes.
The women were worse, just.
Current suit I'm wearing to death came from Debenhams, my M & S one is a nice looking suit but doesn't travel well at all. The first time ever I've ended up ironing jacket sleeves in a hotel room!
TBH it depends on what shape you are, being baked bean shape means most don't fit me & asking for a 42" waist in the designer outlets normally has 'em laughing in the aisle!

I bought an Austin Reed suit some time last year. I wear a suit to work everyday. I have about 10 suits that I alternate.
However, the Austin Reed suit which was reduced from £500 to £250 which I purchased in the sale started to fall apart within less than 6 months. I had to bring the suit in and they even had the cheek to charge me for restitching work. I will never purchase another AR suit.
Ted Baker Endurance is very good. I have two pairs that are still going strong after 2 years.
If in Canary Wharf, check out a huge shop that sells a variety of suits. I can't remember what's it called but you have suits ranging from Boss to TB. All in the sale now as well.

you get measured in London, and your chosen design is made in Hong Kong and sent back. You collect, do final alterations and go. £463 for a 2 piece from expensive material and 2 pairs of trousers.
Mine's not back yet, but a friend was very pleased with his suit that he got married in. It's a good price for a properly fitted suit IMO.
