Where else to live...

I have had an interesting proposition this morning and am looking to gain the insight of the P&P on this one...
I moved to Surrey from the West Country 10 years ago and while I do like living here i have no immediate ties (wife,kids etc), I have had a call about a job in Manchester that is paying quite well, I always thought the pay was less up north but it appears from this job and others I have seen its much of a muchness with London in my field....
The cost of living however is vastly different, looking online this morning I can get a 1 bed riverside apartment for the same as i am paying for a flatshare down here...
Does anyone live/work or had experience of Manchester what is it like as a city?
Also if you could just up sticks and work somewhere else where would you go?

In the UK I've always thought Bristol might be good, but I guess you know that part of the world too well already

Yeah i spent a lot of time in Bristol, a nice enough city but I do know that area very well....
I think its just seeing the cost of renting/buying up in Manchester, I could be a lot beter off....
If you are prepared to live outside the city you can buy for even less 
how does a nice 3 bed semi in a ruaul location 30 mins from City Centre for ~150K sound?
Manchester is a decent place. Argueably the best thing that ever happened to it was the IRA bomb as its been pretty much rebuilt and is really well done. There is lots to do in and around the City for all tastes

Excellent city, lived just outside for nearly 20 years.
Great shops, nightlife and football team.
Not too far away from great countryside as well.

That is so true, the city really changed for the better after the bomb. It's been a few years since I lived in that neck of the woods, and I wouldn't go back, but that's because I have a family now and am enjoying being away from the hurly-burly of city life.how does a nice 3 bed semi in a ruaul location 30 mins from City Centre for ~150K sound?

I have lived in Paris, Brussels, London, and briefly in a few other European cities, and Manchester is right up there for fun things to do, with the added benefit of being lots cheaper. Crime is like any other city - stay away from the rough areas and you will be fine. The people are nice as a general rule, and there is a lot to be said for northern lasses.
I'd say go for it as long as you can stand the weather. True it doesn't rain ALL the time, but Manchester is in a rain shadow, so it rains a bit more than average, but it doesn't rain in the pubs, so problem solved
manchester is the only city i'd live in [by choice] outside of london.
not from there originally but lived there for 6yrs with uni etc. lived in the city centre [northern quarter] for 2 yrs of that.
great city, has everything you need in a compact space. has had a ton of investment since the bombing. with its musical history, nightlife is great.
there are a lot of scallies but they are very easily avoidable, just don;t go out on deansgate or peter street!
when i was there, £7-800pcm got a 1000sqft 2 bed apartment in a new warehouse conversion with underground parking. that was a couple of years ago but i reckon prices will be similar in view of recent rent falls. would imagine there a some choice bargains if you are in a position to buy.
ETA: if i could live anywhere? tough one. i'm aiming to move to london or amsterdam later in the year and take it from there. ultimately, prob. canada or NZ but that depends on family/work etc. when it becomes an option.

Are you a Scotsman? I am actually Scottish (although you couldn't tell from my accent these days) lived just outside of Edinburgh for 5 years when I was younger absolutely loved it....Cheers for all the help guys, have decided I am going to spend a weekend in Manchester to see as there seems to be a fair few jobs I could go for up there and it seems quite popular, am quite excited about the prospect of a massive change in my life and hopefully meeting some northern lasses
