I used to work as a subby on some of their projects.

Anything in particular you want to know?

Nothing specific, just had an interview for a possible position and was after peoples opinions on what they were like to work for.

With over 33,000 employees, I daresay employees in different departments have different experiences.

What department/kind of work are you likely to be doing?

I do, good to work for in my opinion, what are you thinking of doing though as opinions vary massively between functions.

Oh and try not to believe anything you read in the papers!

Just to clear it up, I do have a job at the moment, just keeping my options open.

Its a Project Management position looking after stations. Also just to make it clear, they have not made me an offer, I've just had an interview and am contemplating my options if I am sucessful.

We subcontract to them at the London stations. I am assuming you will be involved in projects etc rather than driving a train! Its the usual situation of a big organisation - once in you are "in". Their admin systems and methods tend to be a bit antiquated, therefore frustraing. However, there is all the support and training that you could ever need. If you need any specifics, PM me.

Big emphasis on training and development - true.

Corporate buy-in to taking that learning onboard and moving the culture forward - zero.

You will be incredibly frustrated as an NR PM. Things move so slowly. Your frustration will be reasonably well paid though.

I know one of the project managers. From what I hear they pay well and offer good perks however they are strict on people taking the pizz. People fired on the spot for tweaking expenses forms, being late regularly, unauthorised absence. I don't agree with any of the afforementioned practices however they are quick to get rid and make examples of people rather than sort the problems out.

Just re-read that and it sounds like I have had first hand experience!

Did - he was a signaller IIRC, but now he's learning to drive trains with Arriva, the lucky bar steward.

I work for them at the moment!

HR is complete waste in my experiance both before I started and since.

Management are addicted to spreadsheets and I each week get a report on Monday or Tuesday that was run on Thursday and told that x, y, z needs sorting when it is sorted.

There is a huge amount of "not my department" about and communication is a joke a lot of the time.

The company is rife with very sad people whose lives revolve around trains - you will meet some very sad people indeed!

There are some good points but apart from the bonus I can't think of any at the moment.

Having said that - a job is a job at the moment!

Several friends of mine got made redundant from NR last week.

Though they weren't at the engineering 'coalface'.

Yep, my sentiments of the place exactly. I left after losing my rag with a guy from Head Office one day in my review. When he asked me what improvements I thought we could make in the team I replied with "well if we stopped creating meaningless spreadsheets, charts and KPIs and instead concentrated on actually doing the work then you wouldn't be in a job, would you?."

On the plus side, if you can cope with the neverending cycle of 'efficiency' drives and initiatives you'll do just fine. It's as much a job for life as there is. I'm pretty sure you either have to want to leave, you die or you do something so vile as to be unemployable anywhere to actually get out. Thats the only way I could get my head around the sheer incompetence of some of the people I worked with.

Oh and you better just love meetings.

When I was a signaller the general attitude about most office based staff was "the railways run fine from Friday evening to Monday morning without these people, so it could run fine without them all the time"

NR are having some serious cost saving measures ATM.
