Have a great opportunity to propose imminently but will take a while to sort a proper ring (i.e. commissioning it). What can I use instead? Cheapo from Argos? Hula-hoop?
Anybody been in this position before?

I'd go for comedy rather than cheapo.

Ring pull from a can?

Do you have to have a ring to propose?

Wouldn't part of the excitement (assuming she accepts) be her describing her perfect ring so that you can affordably emulate it?

Cheap but not too cheap - nice enough to wear until you get the real one done. CZ instead of diamonds and perhaps a coloured stone of some description.

Or a non engagementy type ring that can be worn afterwards - there are some nice Tiffany silver rings with stones for about £100. Nice bit of costume jewellery.

Location and timing are more important I think.

I bought her a cheap silver ring the following morning until we could go shopping for the ring that she wanted.

She won't see it as being official until you get the proper ring anyway so don't bother with the other one.
Wait until you get the real one, then ask her.
I'm saving up for an engagement plasma screen for my GF.

Tell her there's a recession on, she will understand, and if your lucky she will say no and you will have saved a fortune. Every one's a winner!.

Just tell her you're too mean to buy one. If you survive that, you should have a good future together biggrin

A friend of mine had a promise ring, essentially the ring he wanted but without the diamond instead it had CZ or Glass I believe, he paired this with a trip to NY to get the Diamond which went down rather well..

Friends of mine have proposed without a ring as they wanted their partner to be involved in the ring buying process (they are epically bad at that kind of thing so it was safest)

Difficult one!

If this is something you have talked with her about doing before now (and so are 99% certain she's going to say yes!) then i would wait until you have the ring as well as i an ideal location/time.

If you want to do it anyway I would suggest that anything would do the trick, perhaps looking more to the comical (hulahoop/plastic novelty/etc) rather than a cheapo from Chavgos.

I bet there's plenty of chaps on here who had one thrown back in their face. Ask to borrow one!

key to escaping the expensive ring trap!

use whatever materials you can find in your immediate surroundings..at that moment in time!

(ring pull from a can, plants like creepers or climbers in the woods)

hell if you are talking about marriage and proposing in front of sainsbury's...tear a plastic bag to shreds in public and make a ring out of that!!! Romantic gesture! 100 points there!

only you know you were being a smart alec!

I wouldn't use the ring you are "sitting" on though.
It might:
(1) Send out the wrong message, or
(2) Hurt if she puts her finger in it

Although she'd want to be pretty determined to thrown it back in your face.

Yep.

I ask my (now) wife if she would care to marry me by prefacing the question with "now dont laugh but Ive got something to ask you" whilst we were in the crappy diesel fiesta on our way to Morrisons after work. Had no ring, was driving when I asked her...well actually I was stopped at the traffic lights waitnig to turn right...and wasnt even dressed that nicely.

Rather amazingly she didnt laugh and said yes.
