Hello all
I am an Elise owner who wishes to upgrade to an esprit. Variety is pretty limited in my country (Greece). I found a yellow esprit that seems to be in good condition but:
The owner claims the car is an S4 2.0 95 model. After doing my homework I figured out that all S4 models were 2,2 liters and the only 2.0 esprit was the gt3 almost two years after. So what is happening here? Anyone - ideas?
Thank you all in advance

You are correct that the S4 has a 2.2 litre engine and the GT3 has a 2.0 litre engine.
However, what I'm not sure about is this :
The GT3 was made because Lotus had about 200 2.0 engines that they did not know what to do with. The reason they had these engines is that they were made to be exported to the Italian market and they were no longer making any more cars for Italy. So, maybe the car is from Italy and hence has a 2.0 engine. Then again, I could be completly wrong and the S4 you are looking at does has a 2.2 engine and the owner is wrong.

That's right. The car is very likely to be one of the S4 cars made for the Italian market. I own one as well and they are ok.
The 2.0L S4 is as good as the gt3 to drive but also has the comfort and the leather interiors of the S4, so it's a good compromise, I would certainly recommend it over a gt3.

The S4 2.0 was indeed made for the Italian market because the taxes are lower for a <2.0 litre car. Its very likely they importetef the car to Greece and the S4 is some years newer than the S4.

Yes, the power output is the same.
I know that after the few s4 produced for the italian market, Lotus also made an incredibly small amount of s4s with the output raised to 270bhp.
I guess the engine is exactly the same to the GT3, but I could be wrong, there could be some differences.

Well, in the Esprit Fact File you can find the VIN model codes table.
If you check the codes stamped on the chassis and the engine you will be able to identify exactly the model you are looking at.
270bhp is the standard output for the 2.2L S4, but it can also be the output for a slightly tuned/S4s chipped 2.0L S4 I would say.

I don't use the Esprit very frequently, consider that it is a 1995 model and it has 42000KM (~26000 miles) on the clock.
Anyway I keep it very tidy, with more than regular servicing and very diligent usage.
Yes, this requires some time and money, and careful treatment, but the result is that i have NEVER had any serious problem with my S4 so far, especially with the engine.
Only the odd light that burnt and once one of the chargecooler support bolts broken (which costs very little to replace), and that's essentially it.
So I am one of the Esprit owners who really cannot complain about reliability, not yet at least... :-)

Francesco,
My car has a 280bhp memcal from Moto-concept. It allows quite a bit more boost, up to 1 bar at Wide Open Throttle and as much as 1.2 bar when overboosting.
Have a look at : http://freudhoefer.de/lotus/esprit/products/chips/4cyl.htm
