As it says on the tin really, got some reds in mind (Malbec and Pinot Noir) but need some suggestions for a couple of reasonably priced (£5-6 per bottle) whites to go with mature cheddar, chevre, bit of blue for t'dads and Barcelona toast (toasted bloomer rubbed with garlic, olive oil and liquidised tomatoes - sure it has a proper name!).

Would like to avoid the predictables (Blossom Hill & co) if poss.

Cheers,
KS

How about a Sauternes, or something from Rheinland Pfalz, a Grauburgunder perhaps? Something medium/sweet would be more interesting with cheeses...

Sauternes is a nice white, but probably looking at about 8 quid it goes well with blue cheese. And most chardonnays go well with mature cheese.

Sorry, should have said - need to buy from the shop rather than send off for it/booze cruise.
It'll just be family & friends so no need to go overboard but they know a halfway decent drop when they taste it. Price range is to account for the volume we'll require biggrin

Well its well worth checking out some good Riesling, sounds like you dont want anything too strong or over powerfull. A good light Beaujolais is always a good bet maybe something like a Morgon with a slightly heavier tone but a lighter effect!
Also try a good Italian Orvieto , goes great with Cheese, fish and Pasta dishes.Dont buy a cheap one, go for a well established.
Also Im a fan of the Red Sancerre wines, light and quite fruity, depends on guests..!

Blass Chardonnay is pretty good value. Not the Eaglehawk, just Yellow Label Chardonnay.

Yeah, it's lovely, but I'd say too dry for cheese etc.

If we're allowed to go light reds then I'd agree with Watch-Collector or perhaps a decent rosé, buy French though as New World one's are usually too sweet for my taste.

Would have mentioned Rose but it seems to be associated with Summer in Uk and tends to be best served quite chilled so not normally the bestest start to a function this time of year in UK:-(
Generally speaking of course!!

Another vote for White Port and if you could stretch your Budget try Chateau Brown 2005 if you can get it, tasted it on Wednesday and it is unbelievably good.
