Are foreign women allowed to drive in Saudi?

I understand women who live in Saudi Arabia are forbidden to drive but are women from abroad i.e if I visited allowed to drive?

Apparently not. I knew someone who worked there for a while and his wife was not allowed to drive either. I'm not sure if it's different for a pure tourist (if they even allow such a thing?!) but I'm pretty sure it's all women at all times.

That's why they have such a great road safety record.

Seriously, this guy I talked to said that you can notice that in the cars there. There are no parking dents, no one backs into a lamp post, it's either an all out fatal head on crash or nothing.

Women can drive, but men are not allowed to be in the vehicle. Thsi is why we see Utube clips of men in sandals hanging onto the outside of speeding vehicles.

I haven't been to Saudi for maybe 10 years now, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't allowed then (with the possible exception of American military vehicles - the muttawa seem to leave people with bigger guns alone).

I'd suggest foreign women would be wise to take trusted male company anyway when outside a secure area.

Thanks for the info. I do not think I could go there for a length of time if I was not allowed to drive. Driving is my passion.

Ah yes, but they weren't women driving; they were soldiers driving. Well thats how the more rational members of the Saudi Royal Family overcame that issue when the Americans offered to stop Saddam's Republican Guard cming over the boarder in 1991.

See that sort of thing is not only permitted but considered reasonable and sensible there. If it happened in England some dolly bird in a new Beetle would be putting her lip stick on in the middle of the road, and the driver we see here would be the one to get the blame for sliding sideways into the back of her.
