Anyone been to Austria in the summer on holiday?

Hi. We've just been given free use of a timeshare in St Johann, Pongau (bout 30 miles south of Salzberg) for a week in August. We're going to tie it in with a trip to the 'ring, which we will visit en route.

Anyone ever been near there or know what Austria is like over the summer? If not, does anyone know where I could get somne info?

ST Johann is good, fairly quiet apart from during the summer hols July-August
there are plenty of good roads around there to hoon on (Small ones!), don't hoon on the larger ones as the AustroPolizei don't like it. Don't forget you need a Vignette (Pickerl in Austria) for the Autobahn AND buy it BEFORE you enter Austria on the Autobahn otherwise they'll have fun in pinging you for a €120 fine. You can buy it at most petrol stations eitehr 10-day, one month or one year.
All the good passes are now Toll roads but it might well be worth it.
Food in the area is usually good and plentiful but germanic... Make sure you visit the Krimml Waterfall (near Gerlos 1hr west of St Johann). It's worth driving the OLD gerlos pass, new one is toll. Also go up to the Kaprun Glacier and Dam, and the Stubachtal where you can get a gondola up to over 3000m (only in good weather). Also drive the Grossglockner pass right over and down to the south and return by the Felbertauern tunnel.
Visit Zell am See, Salzburg (on foot), don't miss the old castle in Werfen, north on the road to Salzburg. If you're also interested in caves the Eisriesenwelt is an ice cave which is interesting.

I was there last year as part of a 16 man Golf trip - Fantastic scenery as you would expect, plenty to do, historic places to visit.
We stayed in Zell am See south of Salzburg, nice town, beautiful lake and plenty of stuff to do in the area.
The Gorssglockner pass is worth a visit, spectacular drive up to the largest glacier in Europe.
There is plenty of adrenelin junky activities in Austria, rafting, para-gliding, MTB, climbing etc etc..
Very friendly people, traditional food is rather bland IMHO but there's plenty of places to choose from. Austria and surounding countries are really getting switched on to summer tourism, there will be plenty of info on the AU sites

You will have a fantastic time. While summer in Austria will be warm (25-30 degrees) in the Salzburg region it can rain at the drop of a hat.

Ive been not too far away in Zell am See in summer and yep, I can say it is fantastic. Everyone automatically assumes that Austria/Switzerland are just for skiing but they have plenty to offer in summer. Walking, watersports, extreme sports, museums and art galleries, sightseeing and the like its great.

Now, i've only ever been through St Johann im Pongau, but Salzbrg isnt too far away and thats a top place to head, beautiful architecture and a great town.

Like I say Zell am See was great, the weather is usually very good in summer time also. As you're driving you don't need airport help, but if you change your mind fly to either Salzburg or Munich, hire a car and drive into St Johann.

Kitzbuhel isn't too far away and thats another nice place to spend a day.

We went through Austria last August on the Ramshackle Rally. Absolutely beautiful country, we found a lake on the map and drove to it looking for some scenery.
Ended up in a villages umpagh band festival (everyone dressed up, eating sausages) swanm in an amazing alpine lake at 1500m altitude. Also drove into the alps and found a tiny village resturant for a meal, everyone was really nice/friendly and it was cheap as well.
Stunning place but not that exciting I have to say, more a place to see and relax.

Well, like all places it is dependent upon where you wish to live. Kitzbuhel is rather expensive, I know that because my family looked at buying a place there.

Also, in Austria there is a fee which is around 10% of the property price added on at the end.

But, if you search for between 100k-200k Euro you could get a nice 2 bed apartment or even in some cases a building plot in some good areas like th Tirol, Zell am See or in the Salzburg region.

Wow guys this has been a fantastic response!

I wasn't sure about going there at first as our first choice was to visit northern Italy. However, hearing this response I'm now really looking forward to it. I'll be in touch with some of you nearer the time to quiz you some of the places to go if that's OK?

Just need to buy a suitable weekend car that will be upto the trip. I'm thinking S2000. This going to be so good.
