Wanted to check the water level on my Chim (had it for one week now) and and it just wont undo, tried the rubber glove and it still wont move, is this a "they all do that sir" question.

The car is kept outside and there was a slight frost this morning, would warming the car through then letting it cool down help?

It's not running any different just thought I'd check it?

Thanks in advance.

Wrap it with a cotton cloth and use mole grips. You could put a small amount of Vaseline on the thread.

Thanks, I'm going to replace with a leven cap soon, apparently these are easier to remove.

I usually use a Stilson to get mine off. (Ooh, err) I used to have exactly the same problem with my Cossie when changed to an ali tank, so I suspect the ali "binds" to the plastic cap, somehow. And vaseline makes no difference.

It's easier to remove if the engine / cooling system is still slightly warm.

Note: slightly warm - not hot or still under pressure, or that could get messy.

Copper slip works better than Vaseline.

Get the Mk.I TVR special tool (i.e. a dirty great big hammer) and hit the bloody thing! Works every time

Get a Baby Boa. It's a plastic handle and a rubber strap - works just like a chain oil filter remover. You can exert an awful lot of torque with very little compression (and hence damage) to almost anything.

I have one in the TVR's toolkit specifically for getting the coolant cap off because mine is pretty stiff too (Leave it, Podie )

Shouldn't be telling everybody that, Dave, you'll get yourself a reputation.

I have an oil filter wrench (strap type) that lives in the car for mine.

Agree with JonRB, the baby boa is a great discovery. I use it for the oil filler cap in particular, though I often bang my knuckles on surrounding bits of engine as it frees!
