My FTO failed the mot today on emissions....CO 0.668.....lambda 1.151...even tho the V5 says the limits for CO are 3.5% due to it being registered in 2004???? So any ideas? should it be tested as a non cat test? or any ideas to why it failed? new lambda sensor? Water temp sensor? or worse case...new cat.....plus the mechanic said it should be tested as a cat test not as a non cat????

sorry if it doesnt make sense, im trying to type via my mobile!!!!

Looks like you need a new lambda probe, its running lean so check for vacuum hose & intake leaks first, does it do strange idle speeds?

idle speed only changes when air con is used, or when first started on cold morning?

exhaust leaks usual cause of high lambda

funny enough there is a split in the exhaust too, on the centre section, so gave me a good excuse to buy a blueflame exhaust......would this help with the emissions then?

2004. Non cat?
Every car since sold new in the UK since 1993 has had to have a cat.
You said registered in 2004. Unless its an import and on the V5 it sais that it was declared first used before 1993 then you have to pass a cat test. Did it pass OK last year? Presumably yes, so then something has changed since then.
Your CO2 is fine. As said, the most likely reason for a high Lamba reading is a leaky exhaust. The second most likely is sensor failure. As you have allready said you have exhaust issues, I would make sure that the exhaust is NOT blowing at all and take it back for the re-test. I assume it has not been de-catted. If it has, you may want to put the cat(s) back on......

That's irrelevant because AFAIK there is no requirement for the vehicle to have a catalytic converter for the MOT test.
The wording 'cat test' is highly misleading and trips up most people including, it would seem, some testers.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the vehicle emissions are within the prescribed limits, not whether a cat is fitted.
The problem is that most cars will struggle to meet the required levels without one.

A JDM import has its advantages. wink

Sorry think I may have mislead you with the first post, car is a 1994 model, registered 30/6/1994 and was imported to the Uk in 2004.....mot tester said "because it is registered in 2004 then it has stricter emission limits"? have since found this to be bull st.....and it is the first registered date they should have used??

should be tested as a 1994 FTO and as there is no model info for a 1994 FTO (as it was only officially imported in 2000) you will have a defult NO CAT test which is 3.0% IIRC.
smile
i know this is right as i ran a decat FTO for 2 years smile

Woohoo car passed its MOT today, took it to a local garage who tested my old decatted mx-5 and it flew through without a single advisory. Plus they fitted a stainless steel mongoose downpipe, decat and blue flame exhaust.....cant wait to pick it up tomorrow and hear the difference!!!!!
