Has anyone had a lift built on their house?

We've had ballpark figures for an extension but get lots of head scratching when ask how much a lift would be.

But seriously, a local old folks home has one fitted, no cables on top, just a large piston underneath and a hydraulic pump.

Why the hell do you need a lift in your house?

My grandmother had one in hers due to cancer. Was fairly cool. Get in close door.Press button lift goes up ceiling/floor opens up above you and hey presto 1st floor.

I've got one of those, it was installed for my mother who'd had a stroke and couldn't walk. Trouble is now I can't even give it away and it's taking up space I'd rather use for something else.
