So I really want a 4200GT after a test drive a while back...So I called a dealer today to discuss and think about an early 4200GT which someone else has taken a depreciation hit on...well a long story short was they tried (unsurprisingly) to talk me out of an early 4200 as the CC gearbox (has to be CC) is so bad and they're telling me I'd lose more money on that than a updated '03 car in future depreciation as no one wants the early 4200 CC, and if I was to buy an early car it must be a manual...

So I was offered a 1 month old CC 'box car for 55k with 500miles on the clock....OR a brand new unregistered manual, mine for 50k...(made me very pleased I didn't stump up for one when they first came out)

He also mentioned a future reduction in list price...coupled with the fact I had a search on the web and noticed a few spyshots of the slightly updated 4200GT with chrome side grills etc etc...Thats hardly going to firm up the fast falling residuals....

One more thing...I was reading that the latest CC upgrade means that it no longer blips the throttle on down changes...anyone able to confirm this...I've gone off it a bit if it no longer blips!

I'm going away for a few months, think I'll see how prices are going when I come back in April...Anyone want to hazard a guess at another 5 months depreciation on a '03 car... :-)

well the depreciation never stops of course. 47K seems to be market for that car, so no bargain to be had there!

A few months old dealer demo car can be had for £50k if you shop around. One year to 18 month old 4200 coupe trade values are c£40k at best. You do the maths! The depreciation on a demo car is ok but on a new one it is bad unless you get £10k off.

As I understand it the CC software can be upgraded on 02 cars. Remember though that 02 cars only have traction control whereas 03 cars have stability programme.

There is a rumour that 04 cars (due Mar 04?) will have uprated engines rather than the 'standard' 390bhp. Anyone heard of this?

As far as I know MY04 cars are now available. They don't seem to have the side vents, the only thing I noticed that was different was the handbrake - different grip. Don't know anything about the increase in power though.

The cambiocorsa software can be upgraded but (and here is the catch) only once, something to do with the flash memory.

Had similar discussion with a dealer last week. The 02 - 03 gearbox and suspension upgrades are carried out under warranty (didn't know about the "one time only upgrade - doesn't sound right to be honest unless the 04 model had a different electronic box of tricks entirely)

Anyway the sales guy (who I knew from years ago when he sold em a TVR) basically said that the market was a nightmare for them at the moment mainly because the initial list price is too high - and the 12-18 mth cars find buyers at about £45K (hence the £40k dealer trade price) as it then the car is "obviously better than an XKR (similar price), and enough less than a 911 (which of course has depreciated hardly at all)to make buyers bite"

Interestingly Maserati reported thier best month ever in September(70 ish I think) - but if you look around it seems most of the sales were dealer registrations (taking advantage of a one off incentive) hence right at this minute the market of nearly news is flooded hence the "cracking" deals avaliable. Also this glut of pre regs probably explains why the dealer was putting you off an earlier car as he is paying for them in entirety (rather than a PX that has been finaced against the new car that was bought)

Long term however things look better as the cheepest 3200 on Autotrader is a 99v at £27K - there is no reason to think that a 4 year old 4200 will be worth any less than that and to be honest I doubt it'll be below £30K If you look at all prestige performance cars they find a level and them stick to it with incrediably gentle depreciation fron that point almost always decided on condition / milage / spec rather than age.

Me - I'm very tempted by some of the cars out there, but it is probably the right idea to wait a couple of months to see what the differences in the 04 model are

(In Autocar it said the new side grills and front end were part of a "classic option pack" and not a revision to the basic design)

Had a spin in a Spyder today.

Lovely car IMO. I had read that the car suffered from scuttle shake and that the CC gearbox was to be avoided.

I disagree on both counts. Car seemed pretty stiff over some bumpy Wiltshire roads, and the CC was fine. I have driven an M3 SMT over the same road and I thought the Maser felt faster, and had a gearbox at least as good as the BMW's.

Have a 996 right now, but I would definitely consider the 4200. Agree that the depreciation looks very steep now, and is likely to level off after a couple of years.

Best bet is to shop around and find a dealer one miserable wet day just before the end of the month, and steal a great deal from someone who needs to meet a sales target. A bargain to be had out there I think..
