As a simple background, I have a choice of 4 routes that I can take to the M1 southbound. 3 to J28, 1 to j29. These routes will all reverse.

So how come my sat nav varies between these routes when I select a southbound destination? and sometimes selects a different one for the return leg?
I don't regard this as a fault; I'm just wondering. (sat nav is a tomtom, btw)

Is it one of the newer TomToms with IQ Routes?

If so, the device is trying to give you the fastest route for the time of day - different times of the day may give you different routes.

No, it's an 18mth old one XL - I don't think it has IQ routes.

A slight difference in starting position (if the difference in destination distances are small) is probably what is causing this.

If you did the calculation from the exact same position each time, it will likely give you the same route every time.

The calculation can be fastest roads, shortest route, etc depending on your preferences. Sometimes a longer route can be as fast as or faster than a shorter route depending on road types and speed limits (ones that the TomTom knows anyway).

I have had a TomTom One for a few years now and have never had it give different routes to the same destination when calculated at different times ... Only when it was done from different places.
