I have a year 2000 VW Golf 1.6 SE and i have encountered a small (i hope) problem with the gearbox. When i change gears from 1st to 2nd the gearbox sounds as though its trying to rip itself apart, does anbody know what the problem may be?

I can provide a video of this if its a bit more helpfull as im not the best at explaining things.

Cheers - Chris.

keep your foot depressed on the clutch for a little longer, if then selects o.k you have a clutch drag issue. If still poor gear selection when depressed for a short time more than likely a syncro concern in the box itself.

Could also be a dual mass flywheel concern, but i do not know if one was fitted to this model.
Hope this is usefull to you mate.

Thanks Almeister, i forgot to mention that it doesnt make the noise if i double clutch the car whilst changing gear and it only happens going from 1st to 2nd.

Just curious how much would it be too fix the problem if it was one of those you mentioned Al?

Chris

Sounds like the clutch assembly mate. Main dealer region of about £500-600. Depending on what deal they can offer you, With the trade being quiet at the moment Dealers are scrapping for work and offering silly discounts.

Also 1.6 boxes are renowned for diff failure due to rivets being used, vw do a repair kit using bolts
