M400 Aircon Question
Discussion
Decided to go for a spin when it dried up today and tried to test the aircon (not used since last summer). The yellow light comes on but definitely not cooling and no compressor "click" in an out like normal. I had the system tested and re-gassed last May and it worked fine up until I last used it (probably September/October time).
If anyone can suggest a diagnosis I would be really grateful.
I don't suppose anyone knows an aircon specialist in the Newcastle area who will know what they are doing with a Noble? Or is it a trip to Hexham Horselesss Carriages?
Cheers

Did they find the leak before they re-gassed it?If anyone can suggest a diagnosis I would be really grateful.

No I don't think they found a leak. To be honest it was one of those situations where you give them the car and they give it back to you saying it's fine (and it is). No money changed hands because I had just bought the car from Kerridges and because the aircon wasn't working when I picked it up (and drove it to Newcastle) we agreed I would take it to HHC and they would sort it. I remember being in a rush when I picked it up so I didn't go into detail as to what the original problem was.
So is regassing (and finding any leak) likely to be the solution?

Sounds like it was just a 'squirt and go' job So is re gassing (and finding any leak) likely to be the solution?
.An A/C system shouldn't lose its charge unless there is a leak. The fact that it has been re-charged once would suggest that it has lost it's gas again. (it is the most common problem with car air-con after all)
Insist that a leak/pressure test is done prior to getting it recharged again, otherwise you are just throwing money away.
As a fridge engineer and not an oiley rag, (no offence but you woudnt take your fridge to the garage if it broke down) your A/C system CAN loose gas as the gas that is used has a very small partical size and the pipe used is adapted hydrolic type hose which is very slightly pourous, although this would normally take more time to have an effect. One of the reasons you should always run your A/C on any system is to save the seals from "drying out" as the refrigerant carries with it oil. Try a local refrigeration company rather then a garage would be my advise. The system has a reciver drier which acts as a filter of the refrigerant and a holder for the condensed gas. If this was a normal refrigerant plant the correct procedure would be to chance the filter drier, evacuate system, part charge with nitrogen and refrigerant. With your system and the size of the kit in question my way would be to first, vac syestem with a good vacum pump, to boil off any moisture (around 45-60 mins would be plenty) Part charge with refrigerant to get the system to a decent pressure, use scales and charge around 1/3rd charge this wont take long. Then leak test. You can get dye kits that your engineer injects into the system and using a uv light check for leaks using some glasses that show the leak as the dye glows under uv light. Never had much sucess with these kits. Your engineer should have an electronic leak detector and leak detecting spray. If the leak is small great, its just a matter of tightening and fully charging. If its a large leak and can be repaired on site then due to the very small charge they can drop the charge repair and go through the same process. If its a hose or hose fitting I can recommend Pirtex the hydrolic hose guys. So the questions to ask for fridge company are 1,Have you experience in automotive A/C charging (and trust me as A/C systems go automotive is a walk in the park, dont let them tell you any different-youve seen my spelling and I can do it-lol) 2,Do you have digital refrigerant scales 3,Do you have electronic leak detectors 4,Do you have automotive connectors for your gauges or automotive gauges. If yes to all four you cant go to far wrong. The charge for your system is 1.4lbs/22ozs of R134A. Best of luck-Paul
The aircon engineer I use at work did mine, he found the system was fine, but the schrader valve leaked very slightly, he tightend it up and also put a short bolt as a cap rather than the plasic one, he felt it was a bit too exposed and if the valve leaked again it would seal it. It is a very funny thread though.
Sorry guys, I hold my hands up!! I,ve just tried to retrace how I got these figures. I googled it before I joined pistonheads and got a thread from this site. I have tried all configurations of noble GTO 3R to find it but have drawn a blank. I was searching this weight as I thought my system needed recharging. I carefully wrote the charge into the technical section of my noble owners booklet-needless to say I will be crossing that one out - "dooow!" 800g to 1000g sounds about it, I should have checked - my bad!!
